Right now I'm not very worried about the federal government passing more gun control laws. For one thing, the Democrats aren't monolithic on the issue, and the Republicans pretty well are monolithic. So I don't think there are enough votes in the Senate to get anything passed. I don't know who all is doing all the scare tactics, but somebody certainly is with all the spikes in gun and ammo sales.

Several Democrats in both house and senate won with a substantial portion of the rural vote in their states and districts, and I gotta believe they aren't going to tick off that group of people who voted them in. The usual suspects will be pushing for various new laws, but I just don't think they have the muscle to get much done. But when an actual bill not only gets introduced but gets some serious sponsorship, THEN I'll get concerned.

The banning of assault weapons, ammo, or ANY type of firearm for that matter is not going to stop or even reduce the number of killings one bit...

Such a very true statement. :goodjob:

I just have to add this. My son and I will take the 22 rifles to the range just to see who will mow the yard next. Best shot sets in the lawn chair watching other mow. Sounds crazy doesn't it.

Don't blame yourself TS. This place is getting so big with all of the sub forums it is getting harder and harder to navigate.

Thanks Chief for the support. Sometimes I'll reply to a post and can't remember where it was the next day.

I did a lengthly search of news sites and reported civilian unlawful shootings (both in the cities AND rural areas) and I'm confused as hell. I did not find one report where an assault type weapon was used or even mentioned.

Didn't have to reasearch. It's been all over the news.

It's hard to argue the point when that many innocent people get slaughtered with an assault rifle.

How many would those murderers have killed with a knife? Just a few I would imagine... but not 10 or 16 for sure.

Nothing you can say would make sense at this point. All of those people are dead.

Gents:

As fascinating as this thread is, how in the world did it end up i the "General Angling Discussion" section? There are other places on the forum for this topic. Unless of course the guy who started it went to his local gun shop to buy some 9mm pistol ammo in order to go shoot some carp or something...

I agree... I said that earlier, but I was pronounced wrong on that point... apparently.

And on that note, I will cease to contribute to this thread-- and any others that aren't fishing related. It is just silly really.

The guy in Alabama had (apparently) a fully automatic rifle, which I believe to already be illegal. He no doubt appreciated the fact that his victims were unarmed I'm sure.

The kid in Germany had a handgun, which I believe to be something other than an assault rifle. Just guessing there... I'm not a gun expert by any means... but despite the many definitions attributed to the term "assault rifle" (each definition taylored for one side of the debate or the other) this is the first time I've seen a handgun referred to as an assault rifle.

From what I have noticed in the news, print news seems for the most not use the term "assult" and TV news seems to like the term "assult" Now it goes without saying there are exceptions.

BTW, for any of you looking for ammo, I happen to be at Orscheln's, which is a large farm store chain, this evening and there didn't seem to be any shortage. Numerous boxes of .22, 270, 308, and many others.
