New To The Current

Hey everybody, I'm new to the board and planning my first trip to the Current this weekend. Thanks for all the generous tips and info posted over the last year on this board. Flyfisherman seem to be a generous bunch. I'll let you know how I did when I get back. I was curious about one thing if you have any experience. The reserved spots in Montauks area are all full. Any idea on my odds of getting one of the non-reservable spots if I get down there Thursday night? Or what do you know about some of the other campgrounds nearby. I'm pulling a pop-up and like nice level spots, it saves so much time.

Thanks

Dude,

Head past the park office, past the park campround, til the road turns to gravel, go over the dry creek past eagles nest general store, and past the nice little dust catcher cabin on your right, next left you see will be Ozark Mountain Ranch campground. Nice place away from crowds with some history. Good luck

Would you care to elaborate on the history of the Ozark Mountain Ranch? I have drove past it several times, tried to camp there a couple of times and they were closed. I have only been in there once to check it out but have never stayed there. I use Tradewinds off 119 when the park is full and I pulled the camper. Otherwise, I can toss the tent anywhere and have slept in the recliner in the Blazer too(front seat back or back seats forward).

I havent stayed at Ozark Mountain Ranch, but some friends like it alot..I'm not much for the park CG...to many people, to much woodsmoke..Camping on the river is my favortite, but I stay at Eagle's Park when I dont.Think the History of Ozark Mountain ranch has something to do with the cival war..battle or a camp maybe...There is a cave a couple miles up Ashley Creek that has some interesting history...Saltpeter Cave is the name..it was mined for saltpeter to make gunpowder during the cival war era, and Henry Schoolcraft supposedly stayed there for several days during a torrential rainstorm on his voyage throught the Ozarks. Cheers.

The Ozark Mountain Ranch is home to Inman Hollow, where a small civil war battlle(scurmish) took place. I cant really do the story justice so you are better off staying there sometime and having the friendly owner give you the full story. He is quite the local historian! As for camping it has some nice flat areas and also some very secluded areas. Its fairly reasonable and its a bit away from the crowds. Good luck!

The only access where you can stay all night without paying is Parkers Ford...not much room and just a little halfway level ground but you are right on the water and good water.

If you get there it's kind of 1st come first serve, ya know...but it is a nice FREE place to set up if you can catch it lucky with no-one there...last place I know of left where you don't have to pay...probably not for long, lol.

Montauk is like camping in the middle of a stinkin trailor park...not my idea of camping..

My friends say I'm a douche bag ??

Agreed on both points. I fished Parker on Saturday and only saw one person about a mile away and that is great water. I fished below Parker mainly, about a mile and a half. When I got back to the car, I decided to walk upstream a few yards and check out what looked like a big dead run, and it was packed with fish.

Also, camping in the park will be my last option from here on out, it was packed and noisy with no one enforcing the quiet hour. I was next to 5 big, loud, self professed rednecks that hooted and hollared until two in the morning.
