McManus Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 As a nonresident; I always thought your fee was a modest cost to visit your little part of heaven. "Many go fishing all their lives without knowing it is not fish they are after." Henry David Thoreau
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted March 28, 2009 Root Admin Posted March 28, 2009 Oh my gosh! Is this a jab at fish and game? Now that they have sales tax money, some people evidentially think they have TOO much money and should NOT make residents pay more than $2 to do anything- hunt or fish. The disturbing part about all this is legislators getting involved in the fish and game biz. They need to STAY OUT of it. What a disaster it would be- just look at California!
rps Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 I do not KNOW, but my assumption is that this is an attempt to win a different fight now going on here. Fish and Game recently recieved 29 million from a gas lease of Fish and Game land. Attorney General's opinion says it stays with Fish and Game. The Ledge wants it for the general revenue fund, especially if the lease has a strike and starts to pay 20% royalties. A law suit is pending, and this may be a not so subtle reminder by the Ledge that if Fish and Game doesn't share, their other sources of income may dry up. Evidently our Ledge didn't get Phil's message about no politics.
Danoinark Posted March 28, 2009 Author Posted March 28, 2009 Phil I have to agree with rps. They are going to get that gas money or else. Its an attempt by some legislators who got their feelings hurt when AGFC used their own resources to raise their own money without an increase in taxes. Hats off to the AGFC. DaddyO Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Maybe I read that wrong. That looked like it said that I could buy a nonresident annual fishing license for 2.00 or I could buy a 3 day trip permit for 2.00. I must have read that wrong. Why would I buy a 3 day when I could get an annual for the same price. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.

Terry Beeson Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 You can follow the money on this one... AGFC owns quite a bit of property in NW Arkansas that is now under a lot of exploration for natural gas. Ed Gorton/Point Remove WMA has a well on it that is going to be quite a prize. AGFC owns mineral rights on much of this property and the legislature sees that as money out of their pockets since it will go to AGFC instead of the general fund. Otherwise, they do not want anything to do with the commission... The good news is my mom owns some mineral rights in the section where one of the gas wells is going in... Quillback Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Yep the legislature wants that AGFC royalty money. There's some serious hanky-panky going on. This 2$ license fee thing is a way for them to threaten to shut off some of AGFC's funding unless AGFC hands over the royalty money to the pols so they can blow it on their latest spending schemes. This is not a good deal for Arkansas sportsmen.
Quillback Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 BTW if you get the Arkansas Democrat Gazette there is an article about this in the sports section in today's paper.
