Does anyone have much luck with soft hackles at Bennett? If so, what pattern/color? I’ve been thinking about tying some for my next trip. I was thinking partridge and olive might be a good color for Bennett as well as a green butt. I’ve been going to Bennett 2-3 times a year for 12+ years but I never throw any soft hackles. Should I tie a few or will it be a waste of time?

Soft hackles are a good fly to carry, and try, anywhere trout swim. These two patterns in size 16-18 do well at Bennett during this time of year.

I've used the Red Squirrel nymph there with great results. I'm not sure that they are ALWAYS tied with a soft hackle, but I think they are. I used to catch fish after fish using them right above the dam. I'd use a full sinking line and cast towards the dam and slowly strip them back. Also did well with them further up zone one swinging them in the current.

Thanks for the tips guys. Keep ‘em coming. That IceDub soft hackle in Lt. Olive looks pretty close to what I had in mind. There is something about olive at Bennett that always seems to get ‘em going for me.

Thanks again.

Not a waste of time. I've had good success at BSSP (mostly in Zone 2) with Partridge and green and ..... Partridge and orange. #16s .... Swing'em in the current. Be prepared for some violent hits and a few tippet snappers. PC :D

+1 on the partridge and orange. I'd also tie peach and partridge - use a small strand of peach glo-bug yarn or peach dubbing, if you can get it. It's my insurance fly when nothing else is working.

Cool, Thanks for the advice. It looks like I’ll be picking up a partridge skin this week. More tying materials. wooohooo gotta love it.

best soft hackle for Bennet/Montauk/Meremec/RR? Try a #16 'fuzzy pellet' - though a hackle isn't necessary. Only if you want to feel better. Match the hatch!
