Cajunangler Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Ham and I just completed our annual spring fishing bonanza. We were slated to go to Toldeo Bend but due to unforseen reasons we revamped our plans and stayed closer to home. We started our 4 days of fishing this past Saturday and concluded on Tuesday. We launched out of the Buck Creek area and fished in creek arms and pockets to the east and west of there. I won't be going into too much detail due to my personal dislike of seeing tons of "viewers" and only a few contributors. But what I am willing to share is: we caught good numbers of fish each day. The average number of bass we caught each day was 60-70. One day we actually broke the century mark. But while we were on active biters we definitely could have done better with regard to average size. We did not have any bass over 4 pounds and most were under the 15 inch size limit. We did have quite a few spots that would have made the 12 inch size. We were throwing the same types of lures that you see talked about at TRock and tried to concentrate our efforts in the upper half of the creek arms and fingers. This was our first time to visit this section of the lake and we both plan on returning in the future. I know this report does not offer much detail but if you would like more info send me a PM and I will get back with you on more of the actual lures and techniques we used. Assuming you also offer help on these message boards. Bottom line, fish are biting and if you look at the weather conditions we fished in you will see we had it all. Prefrontal, postfrontal, bluebird skies, and lots and lots of wind. I don't think we got sunburned but standing in a boat for 10-12 hours in the winds we had definitely gives you a windburn. Good luck to everyone. I have attempted to attach one picture of a "fish" Ham caught one day. Based on his excitement I have to think he believed it was a stange looking smallie or washed out LM. I didn't have the heart to tell him otherwise.
Ham Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 After 20 whatever years, I would have thought Cajun would know that I love catching just about anything. It'll be a cold day in Obamaland before Cajun has to tell me what kind of fish I just caught. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
vacation Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Caught one of those about 7 years ago on Lake of the Ozarks with a green wiggle wart during bass spawn...thought i had a record bass on, but turned out to be the biggest drum i had ever seen. 2 years ago, I was at LOTO in May and threw a pop-r in back of crick and BAM...again thought i had a 10 lb bass on the line, turned out to be a 20+ lb carp that my buddy wouldnt let me bring in his ranger...oh well
Sam Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 When you catch a big drum, and if you want to mess with it - do you guys know about the two "rocks" in their head? They grind those together to make the "drum" noise, and sometimes if it's real quiet on the lake at night you can hear when there's a drum around. Each "rock" has the letter "L" on it, and the old-timers said that stood for "luck". My partner caught a giant drum on a Texas-rigged crawdad one night several years ago. Of course we thought he had ahold of the world's biggest bass, or a flathead, or something - and we were disappointed when we saw what he brought up. We took it home and cut the rocks out, the rest of the fish went in my garden compost. Each of us carries one of those "rocks" in our pocket as a lucky piece, and they're bigger than a quarter.
Forsythian Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Excellent report cajun, thanks! That is some beautiful water, isn't it? I love it down there, even in the lean years. Blue water, aesthetic shoreline, and little traffic. I can't tell you how long it's been since I took 4 days off just to fish... part of it is living down here and having the opportunity to go "for an hour or two"... but the other part of it? I don't know. I gotta re-think my priorities! Sam, I guess I'm gonna take the boy out today and fight the wind and the crowds... it's my only day off, so I gotta do it! Cenosillicaphobiac
Sam Posted April 4, 2009 Posted April 4, 2009 Sam, I guess I'm gonna take the boy out today and fight the wind and the crowds... it's my only day off, so I gotta do it! Well, good - it's too bad you've got the wind to deal with today but this looks like the best fishing weather we're going to get for awhile. I hope you and the boy have a great time. Living in Forsyth, you've got the advantage of knowing more of Bull Shoals than I do. I know the lake real well from Powersite down to Horseshoe Bend, but that's about it - I don't even know where Buck Creek is. I've driven down to Theodosia a couple of times and put in there, and I sure like that part of the lake. I know I'm missing out on most of Bull Shoals - it's a big lake.
Forsythian Posted April 5, 2009 Posted April 5, 2009 Fished out of Elbow yesterday for about 4 hours... it was pretty tough. With the wind blowing the way it was, we pretty much stuck to throwing spinnerbaits and wiggle warts. When we did find some calmer pockets we tried for crappie, but no go. All told, I guess we caught about 6 short bass... all on spinnerbait. Since the fishing was a bit slow, we did a little exploring as well. It was nice to get out... and get the kid away from the video games for a day. Cenosillicaphobiac
