Bman Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 Hey folks, Does anyone own the latest St Croix Legend Elite 9ft 4wt? Have you tested it? Thinking about a rod in this price range that will protect lighter tippets. Thanks, Bman The only good line is a tight line
tippet7 Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 Bman, My brother had a Legend Elite and got rid of it, a good friend of mine also has one (4wt) and actually uses it for a back up rod! he likes the action, and feels good, but he thinks his TFO Professional 9ft 4wt casts better. I have not cast the Legend Elite, but I have 5 St Croix rods and my brother has 4 or 5 as well, so for him to tell me he didnt like the way it felt, means for me to get the TFO. My brother bought a TFO 3wt and an Orvis Battenkill reel with the money he got from the St Croix. hope this helps a little john You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.
Bman Posted April 13, 2009 Author Posted April 13, 2009 Hey John, Thanks for your feedback. Wow, that wasn't what I was expecting to hear but I value your opinion. I am looking for what I need to hear, not what I want to hear. Having said that... I own a St Croix Legend Elite 9ft 5 wt, and a TFO Professional 9ft 5wt. I will have to say IMO, the TFO is much less accurate, I have to work noticeably harder to get the same results, and has too much mid-flex for my taste. And that is with using the same reel/line on both. But I'm NOT knocking what you said, thanks again. I will test the TFO, probably a Winston, Sage, and any other rod in my budget. My price range is $500 bucks max. At $440 the St Croix falls into my price range, they have actually come down in price. I paid $500+ for the 5wt in '06. Thanks, Bman The only good line is a tight line
loo10 Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 I have a Sage 486-3LL that has seen the water maybe 2X if you'd be interested. Sweet rod. I'd sell for a fair price. I just prefer 5-6 wgts. tippett7 Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 Temple Forks are cheaper, but I have a 9' 4W Sage Launch and I absolutely love it. Great for casting 6x or 7x leaders.
Members Stragler Posted April 14, 2009 Members Posted April 14, 2009 Sage SLT 4 weight. I just love it.
Ham Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 I fish St Croix Legend Ultra's (5, 6, and 8). I got them used and on close out when the cosmetics changed. I don't even know the normal price range, but I do know I absolutely love them. They sure seem to take the work out of casting. How do they compare to the LE's ? fly2fish Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 My favorites and most used are 8' 6" (now 5" ) 4 wt Sage for night fishing Taney 8' 3 wt Browing for day fishing Taney, Crane and small ponds 8' 8 wt Heddon fiberglass for heavy freshwater and saltwater 7' 8" 5 wt Berkley Performa for everything in between. Also have a 6 piece 8' 5-6wt Martin for traveling when I can't take the others. Best thing I didn't pay over $40 for any of them F2F
