Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 4, 2006 Root Admin Share Posted April 4, 2006 THE BIG DRY Hook: Standard dry fly hook # 4 Thread: Uni- thread 3/0 black Body: Peacock herl (4 strands palmered) Wing: 1/8 “ foam cylinder and calf tail with flashabou accent Legs: Round rubber med. (black) Hackle: 2 Grizzly hackles palmered TYING INSTRUCTION Get the thread started and get about four strands of peacock herl and wind to the bend. Wrap the herl up ¾ up the hook shank. Cut the excess off. Know if you buy the pre made ones from Wapsi you will just grab one and tie it in. the length you want is a little past the bend of the hook. I also cut the foam at an angle on both sides. This will help you tie it in better and the back just gives it a nice look. You don’t have to cut the back, but the front one is really important because of the way you tie it in. Cut you about 8 to 12 strands of flashabou and tie that in. Cut it to the same length as the foam. Maybe a little past the foam. Get some calf tail and tie that in and that will be cut to the same length. Tie in two strands of grizzly hackle. Now you will want to tie in the round rubber legs. Tie in the middle of one piece on each side. Don’t worry about the length. That will be entirely up to you. Once you tied in your legs you are ready to wind the hackle forward. I do about four to five turns with each one. I don’t grab both at once though. I like to wrap one and then the next one. It just makes a better profile with how the hackle will look like. whip finish the fly. NOTE: I use this fly in high water and in fast riffles. Throw it in the riffles and when it gets to the tail out of the riffle that is where you will get a lot of strikes. I have caught a lot of big fish on this fly. Also if it windy this fly will work just as well. Good luck!
Wayne SW/MO
Is Black the most effective color? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Kayser
Whats it supposed to imitate? Or does that not really matter if the fish are hitting it? Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Wayne SW/MO
Phil do you have the foam? I was wondering if a Yellow wouldn't also be a good color. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
motroutbum
looks like a peacock caddis with foam and rubber legs There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
Gavin
That fly looks a bit like a sphinx moth (catalpa worms turn into sphinx moths). Wayne, I've seen a very similar fly tied with black foam pipe insulation. $2 at any harware store buys a lifetime supply..Cheers.
Jeremy Hunt
Wayne, We do have the foam at Lilley's Landing fly shop. I have tied this fly in yellow, orange, red, white, blackfoam post bodies and have done well on all colors. I would have to say that black is probably going to always out fish the other colors. If anyone would like to know how to get this foam. Wapsi carries it and you can get any fly shop to order if they do not have it in stock. It is called cylinder foam. The size you would need is 1/8 and 3/16. I will talked to Phil and see if we can get some other sizes and colors in the foam. jh Accept the drift.....<>>><flysandguides.comVisit my blog

Wayne SW/MO
I would think that Yellow and Brown would be a great warm water color about now. It would also make a good indicator fly. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Jeremy Hunt
Wayne, Yes it does make a great indicator fly. I would say tying it with a brown foam post would do the trick for warm water species. If you tie it with a orange foam post they will take it for an indicator. If you look at my pic next to my name you will see one tied with orange and he took this as a indicator fly. Going fishing right now and will be throwing the big dry until the water comes on. I will let you know how I did. ATTENTION: Classes will start back up this month. Tuesday nights from 7pm until 9pm. They are FREE and you can't beat that!!! Everything you tie you can keep and I always give you some extra scraps laying around so it is a good way to get some free material and learn some great patterns. If you are wanting to be apart of this let me know so I can prepare for class. If anyone can make it this Tuesday then we will have class. If not then we are gong to start classes on the 21st of this month. Accept the drift.....<>>><flysandguides.comVisit my blog
