denjac Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 I have 3 shimono symetre less than 6 months old and after fishing for 2 weeks in the rain I have a problem. When the get wet they start to reel hard and somtimes lock up for a second. When they dry out they work perfect. I called Shimono and they said they have not had a problem like that, hmmm. Did some searching and some say that the nylon bushing on the worm gear swells when wet and that causes the problem. Water shouldnt be able to get in there anyway should it? Any quick fixes out there? Anybody else have this problem? love the reels and hate to get rid of them, but I cant put up with that. Oh buy the way I have a a Shimono Sahara spinning reel and it doesnt do it. Works fine in the rain. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Gavin Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Its a common problem with Shimano spinning reels. I chucked mine and replaced them with a couple Diawa Excellers and some U.S. Reel Supercasters. Diawa's are OK but the bail springs are weak. Not a big deal if your in the habit of flipping the bail manually. The Supercasters have performed flawlessly. Cheers.
Al Agnew Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Yeah, I can't believe that Shimano keeps saying, "Noooo....we never heard of that before." It's a common and VERY well known problem and well publicized on the internet, and I know that a lot of guys have talked to Shimano people about the problem. Supposedly it was quietly fixed a couple years ago, but I don't think I'd buy a Shimano spinning reel at this point. It's true that some anglers never have a problem with the Shimano spinning reels, but I've got an old Symmetre ultralight that never gave me a problem, and a Sahara and a Stradic that were horrible with it, just getting them CLOSE to the water and they'd bind. Shimano casting reels are great. But lots of other companies make more trouble-free spinning reels. I've got a Diawa and a U.S. Reels that I'm happy with right now.
Members DoctaJ Posted May 4, 2009 Members Posted May 4, 2009 Al, Working at BPS, I've never heard of that problem. This is a huge heads up for me. Shimano is one of the top sellers. I would either take it back to where you bought them or send them back to shimano for warranty work. These are the newley redesigned symetreys right? If it is the new shimano design, I don't know what to tell you but to get a different reel. Surely something could be done to fix them.
Members Jim: NE/OK Posted May 4, 2009 Members Posted May 4, 2009 Shimano has received a bad rep for binding on the fishing web sites for years now. However, "they say" it doesn't happen on the less expensive reels. I've used the $60 Spirex's for several years without a problem. I've been in rain, dunked them and even retrieved one from a stream bed two weeks after capsizing my canoe in high water, and it still works fine (after cleaning). Jim
Gavin Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Cleaning did nothing for the two Sahara's, and my wife's Spirex that I pitched a couple years ago. Get em wet, and next thing you know they started to bind up. Thats just not acceptable...not even in a $10 reel. Not sure if they have fixed the issue or not, but I wont be buying another Shimano spinning reel anytime soon.
denjac Posted May 4, 2009 Author Posted May 4, 2009 Talked to Shimono again, there tech is supposed to call me back. Not holding my breath. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. trout fanatic Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I own 2 shimano's (a stradic and a sonoma) and fortunately neither suffer from this problem (knock on wood). What is amazing to me is why does this affect some reels but not all of them? I mean, heck I use mine for winter steelheading and they are always wet (as in soaking wet) yet nary a stumble. There has to be a logical explanation (and remedy). It would be a whole lot easier if shimano would fess up and fix the darn problem to begin with
denjac Posted May 5, 2009 Author Posted May 5, 2009 The Shimono guy did call me back. He asked how cold it was here when I was having trouble. Told him 48 -60 degrees. He thought if it was too cold it might cause the problem I was having. I said they should work if its 20 degrees with a 30 mile an hour wind. He did offer for me to send them to him so he could look at them. Told him it would be a waste of time as they would be dry and work fine. I know they know there is a problem but wont own up to it. Back to zebco 33. They work better when you dunk em. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo.
