DoveTail Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Here's a link to a neat video on the wester trout streams. About 12:34 into the video is talks and shows the contents of a brown trout that has eaten 5 other trout. Proportions are not that far off on how big of a fish the brown can eat in the video.. http://www.idahoafs.org/video.php I'm sure they eat some, but how many browns are in the water and how many rainbows do they eat? The big browns can lay low during the day and hunt at night. I'm not sure how many browns are in there or what the diet is. I wish I could find some pics of trout that were caught on lurers almost their own size. A big brown may get full on 1 or 2 trout? I don't know. How many big browns are in the deep pools that stalk at night? Some photos from Bennett show some pretty large browns that look stuffed. They could be bottom feeding on the cleaned fish and not taking a toll. Nothing scientific other than some guides mentioning - "it's a good thing they stock rainbows, otherwise there would not be any with all the brown trout". Just their opinion. The browns would be a great cleaning system if they only picked up gut piles. I missed the DNR report they would be stocking less. Regardless, any day on any stream, I really can't complain.
Paola Cat Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 I was at RRSP a little over a week ago fishing the C&R area and witnessed the vinyl hatch. What a sight ..... out of no-where a full hatch of multi-colored float thingies appeared. A whole clan of vinyl hatchers were in full progress. All shapes and sizes from the nymph state to the full grown adult. This was accompanied with multiple shrieks and screams (I guess because of the cold water). It was absolutely incredible. I didn't have a pattern to match it. All I can say is that you had to be there. PC Cheers. PC
DoveTail Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 I didn't have a pattern to match it. Maybe a beer can with a big hook would match the hatch?
Paola Cat Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Dove .... Your right. I'm thinking a top water beer can (in size 12 oz.) with a Jack Daniels dropper drifted drag free in the middle of the vinyl hatch would have got some takes. PC Cheers. PC

A simple treble hook (unbaited) and a heavy sinker will do the trick just fine.. But watch out, some of em are real fighters... cricket.c21.com
