motoman Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 When fishing large tournaments where I have to leave my boat unattended at night, I always remove my tackle and electronics from the boat and leave all my rod lockers and storage lockers unlocked. The prop gets a lock nut and the trolling motor get a cable lock. - I'm with yah, S&M. It's a pain pulling all my gear out, but it's not worth the risk to me, leaving it in the boat overnight. I do the same thing. - I've noticed a few guys at the docks during tourneys, they use a super thick cable, with a jumbo padlock; locking the bow eye of the boat, to the supports of the dock. .................I know, I know, ......................if someone wants it bad enough, they'll get it. But, seeing how most theives are lazy bums; I wouldn't think they would waste time on a boat locked down, when there's 20 others unsecured.
tippett7 Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Do you think the thieves could have been hired by one of the anglers in the tournament to get an unfair edge? I kinda doubt it but has anyone every heard of this?
Whack'emGood Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Do you think the thieves could have been hired by one of the anglers in the tournament to get an unfair edge? I kinda doubt it but has anyone every heard of this? I highly doubt it. That would be a pretty far stretch to suspect that. It was definitely someone who did their research and found out where and when the tourney was happening though. I hope they get punished to the full extent of the law... They need to set an example to deter future thieves from doing the same. Whack'emGood Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 trolling motor get a cable lock. Shoot, I wish someone would come and steal my trolling motor for me... Then I could buy a newer and better one. skeeter Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 motoman, Good idea about cable locking the boat to the front eye hook of the boat when leaving the boat in a boat slip. Absolutely ! Got mine three years ago at Wally World. It's a two part deal to make it long enough to a.) reach over and go around the dock framework and b.) to not stress the bow eye and glass if the boat lift get's "accidentally lowered". Both pieces are made of heavy steel cable covered in thick clear vinyl to protect boat finish. First half is an 8' long cable with swedged loops at both ends. Second half is also a heavy steel cable covered in vinyl that coils up when not stretched out and has the lock on it. The lock on the second part locks with a vending machine style key and that key cannot accidentally fall out when the lock is unlocked. Both the swedges on the looped ends and the lock are embedded in heavy plastic. Both halves have the "Brinks" name on them and seem well made. Cheap insurance to keep these scum from taking your boat out into the middle of the lake at night and stripping it.
motoman Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Thanks for the details skeeter. That's the same exact setup I've seen. - All of 'em had the shrouded style padlcks too. Making it tougher for the bolt cutters to nip. (like in the link) - http://www.masterlock.com/commercial/security/
