Members faded Posted August 3, 2009 Members Posted August 3, 2009 Sounds like a pretty good trip to me...Having lived in Fort Collins area for a rear or so I can attest the weather in CO is hard to figure....Never quite sure what it will end up doing....I have been thinking about the Thompson lately...made that drive up to Estes quite a few times and was always intrigued by the little cabins on the side of the road with the Thompson running right in front of them....Never fished out there but would love to go back and give it a shot...

We had planned to drive up to Fort Collins but didn't make it. I hear it's a great place. I think a few years ago it was voted as one of the top 10 best places to live in the US. 10pointer Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 my family has a house up in estes, and i usually make a two week or so trip each year but unfortunately not going to get to go up there until fall or winter break because of college and working this summer. RMNP is absolutely awesome and ive had plenty of awesome days in morraine park, the st.vrain, big thompson, etc. You cant beat lilley lake for the greenbacks though...i caught 20+ one evening on dries up there on an unbelievable hatch. Another great hike is the alluvial falls, sky, and lake of glass etc. Those lakes up there are stellar fishing! They take a little hiking though but theres nothing like standing in snow o the banks and fishing in june and july! needless to say i really am contemplating a move up there once im finished up with school!!!
tippet7 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Trout dont live in ugly places! Beautiful cut You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.
Greg Posted August 7, 2009 Author Posted August 7, 2009 Fellows....that place is now on my to do list. Greg what a trip. Took a look at all the pictures. You know we should think about an OAF trip out west one of these days...vans, campgrounds, etc sharing expenses etc. Just a thought. Dano I meant to reply to this earlier. But I think this could be a great idea. I loved the family vacation and would not trade that for anything. But I'd also love to go out west and concentrate on the fishing...... We could probably do it pretty inexpensively too if like you said we could find a van or 2 and share gas $$, campground fees, etc. There may even be someone that wants to participate that has a camper? Greg Yeah something to think about for down the road for sure. We'll keep it alive ever so often to see what the interest might be and get some suggestions. So this trip is going to be a heavily photographed and fished trip. im really excited about it actually. I just hope its not too cold out there cause i hate the cold weather. taxidermist Posted August 21, 2009 Posted August 21, 2009 I have fished the Big Thompson several times during August. One of the best lures or flies I have ever found is a grass hopper. During August when the hoppers get going its always good a CD-1 Rapala also works well. Gold and black but the Brown trout pattern gets good too. First fished Big T back in the 60's with my Dad then later with my cousin. Always pretty!!!!
