Greg Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Yesterday while fishing on the uppper lake I saw what looked like a large osprey with a trout. Has anyone else ever seen one on Taneycomo? I guess it could have been an eagle but it flew pretty low so I got a good look at it and I've seen osprey in Minneosota years ago and that is what this looked like to me. He/she had a pretty large trout in its talons. Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 17, 2006 Root Admin Posted April 17, 2006 Yes we've had Osprey on the lake for 2-3 years now. Just less trout for us humans!
Greg Posted April 17, 2006 Author Posted April 17, 2006 Just curious Phil - Are they on the lake year round? I wish I had gotten a picture of it. Greg "My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it" - Koos Brandt Greg Mitchell
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 17, 2006 Root Admin Posted April 17, 2006 If they're here this late in the season, I'd imagine they're here all summer.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 Did it look like this ??? I am not sure I've seen these at Taney myself - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 18, 2006 Root Admin Posted April 18, 2006 You're too busy fishing... they are there.
Brian K. Shaffer Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 I see lots of little Kingfishers, and I see tons and tons herons.. I see about everything flying around down there.. but I am not sure I have seen these guys. What would you liken to the size are these Ospreys ? I read here where they might resemble Eagles. And if they are not solid white, (like gulls) then I am not sure I have seen them lately. Perhaps too busy fishing yes.. but I am the guy following foxes in the dark with a camera and a pooper scooper. So ?!?! FRENZEL Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 THe first one I saw on Taney was at the Dam when I was a sophmore at C of O.(1995) Then I think it was just a seasonal thing. The last few years I have seen them throughout the seasons. I've seen a few on Bull Shoals too. TRACY FRENZEL FRENZELS GUIDE SERVICE 417-699-2277 "ONE MORE CAST"
Greg Posted April 18, 2006 Author Posted April 18, 2006 That's a good picture. Yes it looked just like that. I might not have noticed it but it flew right over me. It was just a little smaller than a bald eagle and had the black facial markings. It had a pretty large trout too - definitely not a little "stocker". Bill Babler Posted April 18, 2006 Posted April 18, 2006 Yes boy's there has been an osprey working upper taney. In the last week, I have seen him and also 1 current bald eagle. The osprey will dive and hit the water with such force, you would think he would break apart, He is eating live fish. The eagle picks up mostly dead or injured trout with its talons. I don't believe the osprey will eat carron, and the eagle would rather have it if he can get it. I have seen osprey nesting in the dam area for several years, There has also been a nest near Baxter for about as long as I can remember. I believe they must use the same nest year after year. The Osprey's probably live up on the rock, and just have a hankering for some fly fishing. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
