txspecks04 Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Hit the Baron Fork on Sunday evening for the first time. I was wading on the Arkansas side near 59. Lots of fish in the water, but I only managed two smallies...bigger of the two was probably 12". Pulled both of them on a clouser minnow. Has anyone else done any fly fishing on this stream? Just looking for some tips. I will be getting out there more in the coming weeks to try and figure out some more successful patterns.
Members zthomas Posted June 8, 2011 Members Posted June 8, 2011 I've fished several times under that 59 bridge. Last time, I took a little one-man pontoon and rowed up to the first gravel bar and riffle above the bridge, where there's a nice, deep run with a rocky bottom. Got a few smallies and a bunch of green sunfish up there. I always do best with craw patterns--near 'nuffs and crazydads--in brown. Always try buggers and minnow type patterns and always end up going back to the craws. There are a few very nice largemouths that lie under the down wood in the slow water around there too. I've caught (and released) a a few in the two-pound range. PM me if you want to fish up there sometime. Hit the Baron Fork on Sunday evening for the first time. I figured I would start with minnows (clouser), then move to crawfish (I agree, crazy-dads and near nuff are great), and, if that didn't work, I figured I would go to some big ugly leaches or something. I saw some nice large mouth in there as well. I will let you know next time I am headed that way.
Members zthomas Posted June 13, 2011 Members Posted June 13, 2011 Fished for a while under the 59 bridge on Saturday afternoon. The few smallies I got were out in the riffles, lying in little pockets in that bedrock bottom. Hard to fish it with the moss and stuff, but if you could swing a craw fly into a pocket without spooking the fish, you'd get one. Of course, they were all about eight inches long. Still fun, though.
