eric1978 Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 Your right...the 3.5 lb largemouth was a nice fish. Caught several more on it but that one was my biggest. It's been a while since I had thrown a top water bait besides a buzzbait but was pleasantly surprised how well the Sammy worked. I would love to get out on the river one more time this fall.....just need to figure out something around all of the kids activities. I know that largemouth is lurking in the water waiting to be caught again. I'd shoot for the long Thanksgiving weekend. Good time to catch a big boy.

creek wader Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 Bob, just read your bio. I know your area, well. we did a canoe trip from Vienna down to Paydown a few years ago. Stayed at a BB on the Paydown rd. Anyway, I fish in the Jeff area quite a bit. I've stayed off the Gasconade so far. It's a bit of a drive (I'm limited on time) and the stream looks too big to wade. So, I'd have to use the yak. Without a shuttle, the yak would be limited on range. (have to paddle back to put-in point). .. How's the smallie fishing on the Gasconade in that area? It looks wide and slow to me. That's the impression I got when we canoed it, but it was in late July and the river was down and slowwww. 'bout wore us out. ..wader wader

'bout wore us out. ..wader I have been fishing that area from Vienna to Paydown for the last 35 years. My family has several acres off of #42 between Vienna and Belle right by the Paydown area. Your right, it can be slow at certain times of the year but I think the fishing is pretty special. Never have kept anything but have numeroues pictures to show for it. What I love about that area is the constant changing of fishing conditions....deep pockets, shallow water, back water, weeds, rocky areas. Every 100 feet and conditions change. I have caught just about every type of fish you can think of around there...crappie, large and smallmouth bass, rock bass, sauger, walleye, whites, catfish, bluegill, spots, you name it. My biggest has been a 21 inch smallmouth but have caught countless number of 15 - 19 inches fish even some monster largemouth. What I would do is rent a john boat from Indian Ford Resort by Vienna and bring a trolling motor and battery to help with those slow stretches. If you do decide to fish that again please let me know and I would be more than happy to draw a map with hot spots to help make your trip more enjoyable. Bob You ain't a live'n if your not a fish'n
