Put in Sunday before light at Masters. Couldn't get anything on the spook or popper, but they bit the wiggle wart like crazy. Starting at Bluff ends and working my way into main lake cuts and coves produced a lot of largemouth in the 13-14 in range. Caught 21 bass with only 3 that kept. Crankbait basically quit around 930. Interesting thing but I ended up sight fishing for Smallies after that believe it or not. Started fishing a jig on bluff ends and bluff banks and after I got it stuck and went to get it out I trolled up to the shore to retrieve it and was surprised when I saw two dark smallmouth dart out from behind a large rock and back into the depths. They were sitting right on the shore in about 1-2 foot of water. Started throwing jig on the bank and caught several this way. Seen more cruising around right at the bank with their noses in the rocks. Unfortunately once I was close enough most of the time they got finiky and darted off. So I ended up backing off and blindly threw up to shore hoping to hit one on the nose. The ones I saw were big ones too, most looked in the 15-17 range, one looked enormous and I got so excited I ended up spooking it when i flipped my jig about a foot in front of its face. The bite was really light too. When i caught the ones on the shoreline they felt more like a bluegill biting, just soft pecks. Lost about a 17-18 incher at the boat when it spit my jig back in my face. Didn't have a net in my little boat unfortunately and needed the mean things to just settle down for me! : P But thats smallmouth, it was a blast catchin em. All in all a really cool experience.

Never have fished Stockton. Heard it was a good walleye and smallie lake. Love to try it some day. But, I still can't bring myself to keeping a smallie. Even in an impoundment. .. keep the reports coming. Your getting me interested. ... wader

I'm not sure he actually kept them. "Kept" may have been slang for fish big enough to be keepers, but released. At least I hope so. ;)

Stockton is a great smallmouth lake. Seems like they like a popper a lot better on this lake than the spook. But you need to fish that popper pretty fast.

I can honestly say that I have never caught a smallmouth in an impoundment, only on rivers.. Interesting post and report, thanks....

Well then you need to change your evil ways! :P

If I can find the time (wife let's me go) in the next few weeks I would be glad to take you to Stockton and try and get you a impoundment smallmouth. I know where they live but they don't always answer my call. I will be up their Saturday fishing with my Dad. We have been spending quite a bit of time on Stockton lately fishing new locations and doing well on largemouth. Our game plan each time has been to fish locations that we have never fished to learn the lake a little better. But Saturday I will head to my smallmouth spots to make sure they are still there.

Man, you have no idea how grateful I would be.. I'll offer to pay expenses to start with.. Any chance a Sunday would be okay? (most people have religious or other obligations, but it's the only day that I can be sure I won't have to bail out to get to the office quickly).. If not, you ust say when and I will schedule a vacation day..

I warn you, usually my first time fishing any body of water is usually magical...

Yeah, you got it right, Slang for keepers. I wouldn't keep any Smallies, not even from rivers. They don't reproduce as well as other bass and if people were to go around keeping them then days like last Sunday wouldn't be possible. Only 3 "keepers" is what I shoulda said, so dont worry, they're all still swimming around out there. Another thing I'll add is the schools of small largemouth fry I saw swimming around in the shallows in the back of the main lake cuts. Must have seen a school of em in 3 different locations. This made me happy knowing that we'll have plentiful fishing to come!
