Gene K Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Given that you will be there from Thursday - Saturday, and that we are in October now, I think camping at the beach at the S Turn would be a good bet. You can get there two different ways. A. You could park your car at the Parker access, wade across the river (knee deep) and follow the trail upstream. You will come to a spot where the river is in plain view and across the river from that spot is a large beach area. It's less than knee deep to cross over to that beach there. Going this way would be just over a half mile hike. And going this way there are a few other spots that you might decide are more fitting to you, but the S Turn area has a large beach area. B. This route would get you to the same spot without having to cross the river, but it's much longer, you can get lost if you don't know the route (it's not marked at all), or at least leave you wondering if you are going the right way. It would also require you finding a place to park your car other than Parker access, as it would be even longer. For instance, if you had to park your car at Parker access, the total hike distance would be close to 4 miles. If neither of those appeal to you, I can give you a few more ideas... Here's the hike from plan A from above: If you need directions on how to get to Parker let us know.
brownieman Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Gene, Don't know your river lingo, pet names, etc. I have always known that as "The Derry Berry Hole'. That's a nice hike if the horses haven't rutted up the trails too bad. Steve, if you are going to fish much at all from ythere up is a good strech of river...not alot of pressure in that area, it's far enouph from an access point a limited number of people wade fish that far I would say. When I fish Parkers Ford where we are talking about is generally where my line starts getting wet. That's a pretty section of river... not too far upstream from there is where I caught the brown in my avatar...best I recollect about the mid 80s. Caught him in a hole alot of locals always called "The Blue Hole"...A few buddies and I always called it "The Ledge"...bar none one of the best fishing streches of the entire trophy waters IMO...there are a couple of access points in that area but the roads in are bad to say the least and not used very much at all...I beleive the only reason those roads are not closed has to do with fire lanes, could be wrong...not sure. Your car should be safe parked at Parkers but these days who the hell knows...I've heard a few things concerning break ins at Parkers over the years but not too many. It's a shame but where ever you leave your rig parked anymore you take that risk...sucks big time but that's the way it's become. Hope you have a good trip whatever you choose and be safe. later bm My friends say I'm a douche bag ?? Avatar...mister brownie bm <><
ColdWaterFshr Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Sounds like a good trip and very doable. I hiked a small portion of the trail the same weekend as Gavin and he is right. Lots of downed trees blocking the trail up around the horeshoe which is a little further upstream than where Gene is talking about. One blow-down of cedars was so impassable that I had to retreat and wade the river around it. In places the trail is pretty overgrown, in other places its not bad at all, but if it were me, I'd wait on the hiking until the area has had a couple hard frosts and brush and bugs die down a bit. Until then, just float it!

brownieman Posted October 1, 2009 Posted October 1, 2009 Gene, Pretty interesting how different groups of locals have different names for all the holes...who da thunk it, lol. later bm My friends say I'm a douche bag ?? Avatar...mister brownie bm <><
