Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted April 24, 2006 Root Admin Posted April 24, 2006 I have alittle experience in fishing with submergable lights but not this early and not for crappies but I'm going to try. What I understand - 1. Anchor in at least 40 feet of water near structure like a bluff end and/or standing timber. You need at least 40 feet to make room for the shad to gather under the light and the game fish to gather under the shad. 2. Fish just outside or under the shad, not in the middle of the "ball of shad". 3. Take a throw net and net the shad or use minnows or jigs. I usually don't night fish till the first dark moon of June and July. This will be a first.
stone9-7=2 Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Hi, I have been night fishing for 20 +years. Here is one trick for you to try. I call it the boat slide, tie to bluff or tree & anchor in 60 to 70 feet. You can then slide boat to different depth's till you find fish. When fish stop, you can slide to another depth. This work's great. Hope this is helpfull to you. 9-7=2
ryan Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Mr. Lilley you don't need to limit yourself to fishing a depth of 40 feet or greater you can be just as effective or even better shallower. It depends on conditions. One thing to keep in mind is that the shad are going to be bigger you are not going to see the fry like you do at the end of may or later summer months. I would try and buy minnows maybe mediums because they would be a little smaller and stand out. If you net and use the same size shad that are below your lights it's like a needle in a stack of needles. Not saying you can't catch big numbers of fish on netted shad but I think it helps to have something that stands out. I also like to use jigging spoons when fishing under lights fish them next to your minnows and you will increase the number of bites on your minnow while also catching fish on the jigging spoons (usually bigger fish). You can also be very effective by fishing right in the middle of the shad ball, using a jigging spoon or a 1/4 oz jig with a 3 in grub let that fall through the shad ball. The whites and crappies wait outside the shad ball and will dart through the middle to grab a shad. By catching their attention with a falling jigging spoon they think it's a wounded shad and will take it just experiement and I am sure you will catch fish. Ps let me know how you do I love to night fish it's a great way to relax best of luck ryan clark.
