DaddyO Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 I came across this on the web today. I'm always looking for a better knot and I think that I will start using this one instead of the improved clinch know that I've been using. Most of you guys probably already know how to tie this knot, but this was a new one for me. So I thought that I would share it with those of you who don't know how to tie it. Click Here for the Davy Knot DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
duckydoty Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 That is a great knot that is fast and easy to tie. One thing about the video that I dont understand is...why is the guy thanking John Wilson for something Davy invented??? A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! DaddyO Posted October 6, 2009 Author Posted October 6, 2009 I got the impression that John Wilson showed him how to tie it. He also had another video showing how to tie "John Wilson's Trout Crack". DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
Terry Beeson Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 Exactly... Zach Matthews (who is in the video) was fishing with John Wilson who showed him the Davy Knot. That's why he gives John kudos... By the way... Davy will tell you that the knot is not that easy to tie correctly and he is right. But once you get the hang of it and do it correctly every time, it is a 100% knot. I've used it for a few years now and never had one come apart on me... well... one that I tied correctly. When at a fly fishing or tying event and "the man" is there (Davy Wotton) have him show you the CORRECT way to tie it. Matt's video is done correctly, by the way... Don't ask me to describe the correct way... you just have to see it... creek wader Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 WARNING!!!! The Davy knot will not work with braided line. (At least 10 lb./ 2 lb. Spiderwire). I've used the Davy knot for the past 20 yrs. or so, alternating between the Palomar Knot and the Davy. The Davy is easy to tie and doesn't leave as big a knot, so I've used it for trout, (on mono). I've even taught some people how to tie it. Never again. ...The Davy works fine for mono, but will slip through every time on the braided. For the past 30 min., I replayed the video numerous times and looked at still pics and instrustions online, on how to tie the Davy knot. I used the 10/2 lb. spiderwire, because it was handy. I must of tied this knot 20 or more times and the knot will slide off under pressure, every time. Yes, I followed the instructions correctly. I used 3 different websites picture instructions, and the video on this thread. ... I even experimented by adding a few more loops and it slipped every time, any way. Earlier this year I lost a real nice bass on 20/6 lb. braided line, using the Davy knot. I just assumed that I had a weak spot in the line or I didn't tie the Davy knot, correctly. When I tied on the next lure, it slipped off when I pulled hard on it. I just assumed that I tied the Davy wrong. ... With the Palomar knot, when I snag up, I have to cut my line, because the Palomar knot will never slip. ... I wouldn't use the Davy with anything other than mono. Actually, I'll never use the Davy knot again, .. Note..I just tied the Palomar knot, 5 times using the braided line, and the Palomar knot worked every time. wader
Wayne SW/MO Posted October 7, 2009 Posted October 7, 2009 The Palomar is a good Braid knot, among 2 or 3 others. If you use a mono or fluorocarbon hybrid leader you won't have to leave yards of braid in the lake. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
DaddyO Posted October 7, 2009 Author Posted October 7, 2009 My intention was to use this knot when I Fly Fish for trout. I don't use braided line to do that, so, I should be OK. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
creek wader Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 My intention was to use this knot when I Fly Fish for trout. I don't use braided line to do that, so, I should be OK. Yea, that's when I usually use it. When my fingers are too cold to tie another knot and the wind is blowing cold, while trout fishing. .. The Davy is a simple, easy, and (usually) a strong knot. When I tied the one that I lost the bass on. I was in a kayak in high wind trying to tie the knot and keep the kayak in place so, I tied the davy knot, since it was simple. ... I thought that maybe I must of tied it wrong, when it gave way. Then when I tried it at home after watching the video, I put two and two together. I was just letting people know that it doesn't work on braid, at least for me anyway. It should be fine for mono. I've never had a problem with it on mono. Wayne, .. Yea, I use a leader a lot. I just meant that a Palomar knot won't slip or break. That's how good a Palomar knot is. I just didn't realize that the davy knot would slip, with braid. Glad I found out at home, rather on the water with a lunker on the other end. wader
rps Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 After research, the best knot for braid to hook is a DOUBLE Palomar. Look up Tackle Tour and their braid knot tests. Tie the classic Palomar but put the looped end through the loop twice. For a flouro or mono line to hook knot, tackle tour has not tested the Davy. Argue away.
DaddyO Posted October 8, 2009 Author Posted October 8, 2009 No need to argue. I just posted the video so that people that didn't know how to tie the know could learn how. Use whichever knot you feel comfortable with. DaddyO We all make decisions; but, in the end, our decisions make us.
