BredMan Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 The Davy Knot is a great knot and also a great story on how the knot came about. I've been using it for a good while now on smaller hooks when you can't get two strands of line through the hook eye for the palomar knot. I don't use braid so I never experienced any problems at all. Actually surprised this was never posted before.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Good post DaddyO I agree, use whatever you like. The Davy knot has worked for me for years. Davy says the knot is intended for small hooks and small line size. He said that he wouldn't even use it on size 12 flies or larger unless the line size increased accordingly. Even then it's not the best knot for those sizes. Two things he told me about the knot. Use it for small flies and there is almost no waste from cutting off the tag end. That small size is critical when using size 16 and smaller flys. If tied correctly, the knot will slide down and leave almost no tag. That's a big deal for me when using flourocarbon at $10 a spool. Wayne SW/MO Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 I wasn't questioning the value of the Davy knot for fly fishing, but commenting on creek waders comment concerning braid. Braid is particular when it comes to knots. The Knot wars concluded that the Fishing Fool knot was the best for all three lines, braid mono and fluorocarbon. I've started using it for my baitcasting and it has performed well so far. I like a leader with braid for one reason, to avoid having to cut the braid. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 No argument here Wayne, just passing on what I got from davy about the knot. I agree that braid is an altogether different animal, and I love it on baitcasters. BTW Wayne I was arrested in Rockaway once a long time ago. SIO3
Wayne SW/MO Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 BTW Wayne I was arrested in Rockaway once a long time ago The police force must have been bored that day Where did he lock you up, in the bathroom? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted October 8, 2009 Posted October 8, 2009 Took me straight to the judge. He said if I left town right away and didn't come back he wouldn't do anything. I'm not sure the guy was even a judge, but I left anyway. They escorted me up the road to 65. I kind of felt like a visiting dignitary. Obama maybe. SIO3
creek wader Posted October 9, 2009 Posted October 9, 2009 Like I said earlier. The davy is a good knot for small hook on mono. I was just letting people know that it didn't work on braid. I saw that fish n' fool knot before. I never tried it. I think I'll give it a shot. ... Thanks guys. wader
jeb Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 I've been using the fish-n-fool knot for a month or so now. It's a little putzy to tie, but a very strong knot with floro. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha
Wayne SW/MO Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 I've been using the fish-n-fool knot for a month or so now. It's a little putzy to tie, but a very strong knot with floro. I have been using it about the same amount of time. There is a learning curve, or at least for me, but its not that hard to tie really. I like the fact that it doesn't use a lot of line like the Palomar, nor does it seek out trebles. The one thing I have noticed and change from the direction I had, was in the original tightening of the knot. If I tighten it before pulling it down to the eye it tends to heat. I've found that pulling it down loose and then tightening when it't close to the eye avoids this. I've used it with hybrid and braid. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
creek wader Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Speaking of knots, here's a easy one to tie. I've never seen it before. If it has a name, i'm not sure what it is. I don't have any idea of it's knot strenght but, it seems to work fine. wader
