Kicknbass Posted May 1, 2006 Author Posted May 1, 2006 Well, this weekend was a rain out for turkey hunting. I took my cousin out on Saturday, and we heard 1 bird gobble a few tiimes, then the rain came and the hunting was basically over. We came out of the woods and put on the Current river and fished for a few hours in the rain. Let me tell you, the bite was on, I can't force myself to turkey hunt in the rain, but I had no problem reeling in smallies all day. " Too many hobbies to work" - "Must work to eat and play"
Members Bobby M. Posted May 1, 2006 Members Posted May 1, 2006 I got to pay off a little of the debt I owe my dad for introducing me to the outdoors. This morning on our first ever turkey hunt together, I called in bird that my dad shot at about 15 yards. 20#, 9" beard and 5/8 spurs. it wasn't it a monster but it sure made my season.
Members Stuartwp Posted May 1, 2006 Members Posted May 1, 2006 I am glad this thread is here so I can vent my bad weather frustraitions. The wetherman in Kansas city hadn't hit a rain forcast for months. They hit this one 100 miles per hour. I scouted Thusday night and found two good areas. Friday morning at 8:00 the monsoon had struck and didn't relent until sunday morning. So much for my first availible day to go turkey hunting. It didn't help when the land owner told me that they where thick as fleas either. It is nice to know that at a few guys did connect. Its good motivation for guys like me.

Good for you Bobby. It's good to see the weather didn't wreck the weekend for all. I'd do anything to get my dad to go hunting or fishing w/ me again. Age has caught up to he, and he doesn't have the desire anymore. Keep hunting w/ your dad as long as he is able. " Too many hobbies to work" - "Must work to eat and play"
10pointer Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 last wednesday i got to go up north for the first half of the day before i had to get home to take care of the honey-do's. I killed a nice first gobbler on that trip, weighed in at 25#, and had a double beard, one at 11.5 and the other at a little over 6. That and he had 1 3/4 spurs to boot. we took a peak into one of the fields and he was at the other end struttin his butt off and my cuz made a quick call and he came our way. We jumped into the edge in the saplings and one more call and we got him to 10 yards and i took the shot. Ran out to the downed bird and my cuz flipped out, a big double beard as my first gobbler ever. Man it was an awesome feeling and i cant wait to do it again! Im definitely really getting into turkey hunting and hopefully will get another chance this week to head up there.
Members Stuartwp Posted May 5, 2006 Members Posted May 5, 2006 Guess what I saw today driving from one small town to the next, a very large gobler right along the highway, standing in the entrance to somebodies driveway! I looked at the time;12:15. Wouldn't you know. At least I go to see a gobler this spring.
Kicknbass Posted May 7, 2006 Author Posted May 7, 2006 I got a chance to get out Friday morning to chase the birds. I went to a new area. When I got out of my vehicle at 5:45, I heard a bird gobbling NW of the road. As luck has it w/ Turkey hunting, after I gathered my gear and headed toward the bird, I realized that he was on the next ridge over across a deep steep ravine. The bird gobbled regularly as I crossed the steep ravine and climbed the ridge near the bird. I got fairly close to the bird and set up and started calling. The bird gobbler for nearly an hour and I was unable to budge him. He finally stopped gobbling about 7:30. I moved around on the ridge and set up and called from several locations but never had anything interested. It always amazes me how these bird will act. I didn't get a bird that morning, but I did get a good workout. " Too many hobbies to work" - "Must work to eat and play"
