gitnby Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 My 1995 Johnson 200 was running a little rough, especially at idle, and particularly when starting cold. Checked plugs, idle, oil pump, etc and ran some carb cleaner through it, no better. Put some Seafoam in the tank and it seemed to be a bit better, but still sputtering? Talked to a buddy of mine and he said to "shock the engine". Put 1 pint of Seafoam and a gallon of fresh gas into a small gas jug I use for the lawn mower. Unhooked fuel line from main tank and ran it into the small jug, securing it with duct tape so it wouldn't pull out. Cranked engine and ran it at high idle for 10 minutes, let it sit for a half hour, then 10 more minutes. (You have to keep it fairly revved up or it will die with this rich mix) Hooked everything back up, cranked her up and she smoked pretty good for a while. Ran like new! No sputtering, perfect at idle. The ultimate carbon clean, I guess? Tried same trick with my lawnmower. Worked like a charm. I got so excited, I wanted to cut the grass, but it didn't need it!
Whack'emGood Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 Way to go man! Kudos to your buddy for the idea. Thanks for sharing the technique. "Success builds confidence, and you have to learn to trust your instincts and forget about fishing the way a tournament is supposed to be won. I'm going to fish my style and make it work for me." -KEVIN VANDAM "Confidence is the best lure in your tackle box." -GERALD SWINDLE "A-Rig? Thanks, but no thanks. If I can't catch them on the conventional tackle that I already use, then I guess I just can't catch them." -LK (WHACK'EM)
Bird Watcher Posted October 22, 2009 Posted October 22, 2009 that will straighten a dirty motor up quick. I have also used the same method on an old Bronco. I run it for 15, let it sit for 15, so on and so forth until it quits smoking. Supposedly that is when you have burned/cleaned all of the carbon out.
gitnby Posted October 22, 2009 Author Posted October 22, 2009 I paid about $100 for Jiffy-Lube to do a "fuel system clean" on my Suburban, which included a new fuel filter. I do get about 2 more MPG now and it runs much better! It looked like they hooked up some pressurized tube to my fuel line and basically did what I just did for my outboard? 1 pint of Seafoam is about $9 at O'Reilly's (Gallon is $54-much better deal if you use it on all of your engines) 1 gallon of gas is $2.50. 1 fuel filter is $7 So, basically I could have done the same thing for under $20? Live and learn!
crappiefisherman Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 You didnt get hooked gitnby. They did a motorvac service on your vehicle, and yes they ran your car off that machine. The detergent used is not seafoam but a very refined cleaning solution.I was once told it is the same chemical used to clean battleship guns. Most of the time the technician will physically clean the throttle plate and egr valve. The shop I used to work at charged 125 dollars for the same service 5 years ago so I dont think you got got. You also need to know fuel filters are the same as anything, you get what you pay for.If you buy a autovalue cheapy , you arent gonna get as mush filtering protection as a good quality ac delco or wix filter for example.Dang im glad I work at a sporting goods store now............................ My son and I went to State Park put in about 8 o"clock. No go . motor wouldn"t start. Had to get three new plugs and ran fine. After this I will keep staybil in tank all the time. While I was gone to get plugs my son talked with nice army retired chaplin and his wife. Nice young couple, didn't get their names. He gave me a card John Sappington the guide had given him. He was the happiest guy you every saw he had a picture of a 6 pound SM. He said he was a very nice guy and a grate guide. Took the rod from him and showed he how to hit the right spot and when he did he caught a fish. Never been with a guide and I'm 85 but I think I neede to do it. Never caught a fish over 3 pounds,
