Bman Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 My best fishing buddy (Matt my son) and I got down to M.S.P. this morning to slightly higher and swifter waters. Visibility was 1.5 ft to 2 ft deep, which made finding the lunkers difficult, but not impossible. We were walking and looking when I spotted this nice male in his feeding lane munching on passing by bugs. Matt went to work on him, switching flies till he found what the male rainbow wanted, one of our "secret eggs" on 7X tippet! So the chase was on! The fish ran across and back, down deep, and had us running down stream to stay with him. I love chasing big fish! I finally saw my chance, and with a careful hand I netted this fish for my son and we high fived on the stream bank. A quick length and girth measurement, and a couple quick shots for the camera, we made sure to take time to fully revive the fish before sending back to a good place of hiding. Flies we used. Eggs, scuds, and a size #18 midge. The fish are leader shy even in this cloudy water, so keep the 7X handy. A special shout out to fellow O.A. member JJ Troutbum, who was also fishing with his Dad today. It was a pleasure to meet you, and your Dad streamside. 22-1/2" L X 12-!/2" G Nice job son! on 7X! The only good line is a tight line
laker67 Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Dad spots them and you get to catch em. How can you beat a deal like that? Good fish Matt. Thanks for the report on fishing and water conditions Bman.
jjtroutbum Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 This is a fine example of a father and son team here guys. I briefly witnessed them in action. We do work as a good team, we think the same and fish alike, and my wife always tells me the same thing about moving around. Thta's one reason why she doesn't come with me alot, move too fast, finding the select fish.
jjtroutbum Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Sorry not to side track this thread but I also met OAF member HookinEar today as well. He seemed to be having luck dangling cracklebacks to the same pod of fish I was having limited success swinging softhackles at. From opposite sides of the stream....lol Nice meeting you also. Hope your bored fishing partner understands what one more cast really means . Jon Joy ___________ "A jerk at one end of the line is enough." unknown author The Second Amendment was written for hunting tyrants not ducks. Sounds like a lot of fun. I would get down there and do some fishing next weekend, but I think I may have to go deer hunting instead. Tough choice.......
ohmz138 Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Sounds like a lot of fun. I would get down there and do some fishing next weekend, but I think I may have to go deer hunting instead. Tough choice....... Good luck if you do go, the water was about a foot above normal (not bad) and pretty cloudy. This rain coming in isn't good news for water conditions as far as clarity and such. There is alot of the smaller fingerlings that we have been seeing this year, and the fish are scarce and spooky. There is some better ones in there though. Look in the good spots. Matt
