Njardar Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Do you have a favorite fly fishing book or DVD, if so what is it and why did you like it? Ideally I am looking for instructional recommendations (technique, tying, etc.) but what the heck, why not see what others enjoyed. Time to start working on the Xmas list which is different than the wish list. - Charlie
ness Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 I don't have any instructional recommendations, but for enjoyable, humorous, light, fly-fishing related reading the John Gierach books are great. I don't have any one that's my favorite, but I have favorite stories from several of his books. The best instruction I've ever gotten came from guides, FWIW. John
Gavin Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 The Curtis Creek Manifesto is probably my all time favorite beginner book........learn how to fly fish w/o taking it too seriously. Gierach is OK, but I like Robert Traver or Ed Zern's stuff a lot better. Cheers.
ness Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Oh yeah -- Curtis Creek is my favorite too. Forgot about that, and I can't picture mine on the book shelf....... Travers good too, just not much of it. Haven't read Zern; have you got a book name? John
redbird Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Jim Baab is good, kind of a writer's fisherman, more than a fisherman's writer. I like Gierach. I havent read the Curtis Creek Manifesto. Thanks for the tip. Im not a Cardinals fan, but I am a Cardinal. If you know me you know what that means.
Gavin Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Zern has a couple fishing books...How to Catch Fisherman, To Hell with Fishing, Are Fisherman People, but they are out of print...Think there is a best of out there and I'm sure its worth a read. Cheers.
ness Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Just ordered a used copy of "To Hell ..." off Amazon John
jjtroutbum Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 Fishing for trout in Missouri by Chuck Tryon and the Manifesto are both great books for beginners Jon Joy ___________ "A jerk at one end of the line is enough." unknown author The Second Amendment was written for hunting tyrants not ducks. Wayne SW/MO Posted November 18, 2009 Posted November 18, 2009 What the Trout Said. Very good read. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
