MaxDrown Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 I enjoyed this article: http://www.flyfishingfrenzy.com/2009/11/19...-pheasant-tail/ -- Max Drown
fishinwrench Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 Well, how jaded. Not once did he mention the regal peacock . After all, those 3 or 4 little turns of herl is what MAKES that fly. Has anyone ever done well with the original Sawyer pattern ? (nothing but pheasant and copper wire)
jjtroutbum Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 Thanks for the link. Was a good read. After all, those 3 or 4 little turns of herl is what MAKES that fly. smile.gif Lost track of the lady I dated whose family had peacocks. Have never had as good of a source of quality herl since. brittsnbirds Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 MaxDrown, Thanks so much for the link. As I set here watching Saturday college football thinking Dixie and I should be chasing roosters, I look over at her lying helplessly on the couch. Just got her out of the doggie hospital after ACL surgery. Thank god I have plenty of tail feathers from last year, it doesn't appear she and I will be able to get out due to her surgery. Articles like that bring back plenty of hunting memories gone by. So I will pull myself up to the tying bench and whip up some of my favorite PT variations for this winter's catch and release! Thanks again Pat & Dixie

jjtroutbum Posted November 21, 2009 Posted November 21, 2009 Pat Your Brit got an ACL injury? That gotta be a bad deal considering the season in all. Hope that she recovers completely. On my experience dogs that are well taken care of seem to mend surprisingly well. Best Wishes Not sure if this fits into the subject matter of "The making of the Pheasant Tail" but I have a BOXER that went through the ACL repair......after 6-12 months you would never know she had a problem. Dogs are amazing when healing from injuries but having a good vet surgeon is a big plus as well. Our only problem was with me, I am paranoid it will happen again. But I am a worrier by nature. Hope all goes well!

How do you get "all gray" from natural pheasant tail fibers and copper wire ?
Brian K. Shaffer Posted November 22, 2009 Posted November 22, 2009 The gray PT is dyed gray. The pheasant tail is gray and the wire is gray. ? Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
