Members LWW Posted May 3, 2006 Members Posted May 3, 2006 I have recently upgraded my boat from a 14ft aluminum V bottom to a Triton TR19. In the past, my aluminum boat would quickly drift accross the surface whenever there was any substantial wind. It caused me to fish faster than I'd like, especially when trying to keep constant bottom contact with certain baits. I thought my Triton would change all that, but it still sails accross the water with a pretty good clip of its own. Question is: When approaching a windy bank/point, would it be preferable to ride the wind current down the bank, or to boat down the current and fish against the wind blown current to slow down and methodically fish more structure/cover? also, What's everyone think about running your trolling motor fulltime on a low speed? It's hard for me, I try to fish too slow sometimes and probably should run more banks looking for a quick bite. Thanks. LWW
denjac Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 I always point my boat into the wind and run trolling motor when needed. Works best for me especially when fishing structure, timber logs ect. Part of it is it makes me slow down and fish. I am the worlds worst at fishing too fast. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Flysmallie Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Going into the wind is the best way as long as the wind is not too strong. If you stay on the trolling motor all day it's going to drain the batteries. There is an option for slowing down while going with the wind. I've always called them a parachute, drift fisherman use them a lot. Tie one on to the back of the boat and it will slow you down considerably. It's like dragging part of the lake with you. The only downfall is that they will snag on standing timber.
Fishing Buddy Don House Posted May 3, 2006 Fishing Buddy Posted May 3, 2006 Eveyone is right go into the wind! Put your nose into it and fish, let the wind be your friend, use it to your advantage. You will catch more fish. If you go with the wind you will fish way to fast and miss alot of good fish. The only time I will go with the wind is when I'm fishing a spinnerbait or something moving very fast also. But not very many times at all. As far as the tmotor, I try to find a middle ground and use it when needed. I will find what speed will hold me where I need to be, but still have the power to move forward into the wind..
