Chris Barclay Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 For sale is my nearly new St. Croix Avid 7' 3 weight 2 piece graphite fly rod + tube. I bought it from Cabela's the past summer and have really enjoyed it. It's got a terrific tip on it - nice and delicate but lots of backbone. I've caught many bass up to 3 pounds on it and the rod has performed flawlessly. $130 shipped in the lower 48 Contact me at: czarbarclay[at]prodigy[dot]net Thanks! patfish Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Chris, did you hit your head? Did the wife hijack your OAF account!?!?! Why in the world would you want to get rid of that rod?
Geoff Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 oh man...if only this was the 4 piece....i have the older version of this rod and i love it...but i want to get the 4 piece one for better backpacking "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."
Chris Barclay Posted December 9, 2009 Author Posted December 9, 2009 Patfish - I know, I know! It's an awesome rod but I've recently gotten a custom fiberglass 3 weight that I really like and am planning on getting a 3+ piecer with this $$. We still need to fish some time! Geoff - I wanted to get the 4 piece version but had my hands on this one and was really taken by the way it casts and fishes. Chris St. Louis, MOcbarclayflyrods.combreambum.blogspot.com
Geoff Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 yeah i was casting one at cabelas not to long ago and i had to put it back before it went home with me. i still almost want this one but i dont need 2 7' 3wt Avids. i do like the newer styles better then the older. You know, you can always buy mine, cast it for a while and then sell it for the low, low price of what you paid for it. Or maybe I'll miss it and want to buy it back! Geoff, I'm curious what your thoughts are on the older vs. newer versions (Pre and post IPC)? Chris St. Louis, MOcbarclayflyrods.combreambum.blogspot.com
Geoff Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 You know it is really really tempting to buy that rod anyway, cause i wanted another 3 wt to keep in my truck as a just in case rod. but i REALLY want a 4 piece....i keep telling myself that. haha. wanna do a backwards trade In the brief moments i spent casting the the IPC rod, the action seems alot smoother. it doesnt seem that the tip of the rod "throws" the line downward as much. it seems on the one i own that if you come just alittle too much forward them tip of the rod really shoots down throwing the line short. That's a great description. I feel that my rod is tremendously smooth with a good representative flex and feel throughout the whole casting stroke at about any distance. Hmm, I'm tempting myself now! I have a great idea, you could by my rod and have a rod builder section it for you! You can thank me later. BTW, when I was trying out this rod I tried it with a 1 wt line and it was really nice and delicate. Very versatile even if it isn't a 4 piecer. Geoff Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 hmm i wonder if they even can section a rod....hmm... i was planning to go tot he fly shop after work today anyway, maybe i'll ask him. I also think that they changed the names around. I think the avid, when i bought mine, was their entry level rod ( or i was given the wrong one ) Reason i think this is becuase the new ones are about 220-230, i paid 170 or so for mine...with a reel and line. maybe they liked where the rod was going and decided to improve on it, i dunno. In all honesty i might see if you still have it aroudn xmas time, if i have some extra left from my camera purchase i will strongly consider just buying this rod. Chris Barclay Posted December 10, 2009 Author Posted December 10, 2009 I understand, no pressure at all! My understanding is that St. Croix 'upgraded' most of their line. I was thinking that the Imperial was an entry level rod just above the Triumph? I'm no expert though. Which fly shop do you go to? Chris St. Louis, MOcbarclayflyrods.combreambum.blogspot.com
