Members Royalpain Posted December 15, 2009 Members Posted December 15, 2009 This will be my second trip (first back in March) to Maramec Springs and my second time to fly fish, so I thought I would seek out some local advice to make it as worthwhile as possible. I will be arriving around 1 pm on Thursday afternoon so I have a couple hours to fish. With that in mind, what fly's would you start with? Dry or Wet? If wet, how far should I place the shot weight (s) from the fly? Where would you start fishing at the park? Last time I was there, after the horn blasted, I wandered around the bend close to the Maramec River and saw major schools of fish just sitting in the shallow pool-like structures off the main river current? Will these trout bite at all? I assumed if they would everyone would gather around these pools since it would be like shooting "fish in a barrel". Any help is greatly appreciated as I saw that there will be a high of around 47 and it will be clear that day, so I want to take full advantage of this fishing opportunity. Thanks for any suggestions and help.
Gavin Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Meramec Springs has been open or C&R seven days a week so those fish have been well educated by this time.....if the water is clear.....I'd go with small midges 28-20, scuds 16-18, and light tippet 6 or 7x......especially for fish holding in slower water..use a small indicator and set it so your fly is driftng at the level of or just above the fish. Add a shot about a foot from your fly if needed....... If the water has some color it...eggs and buggers should work....You can usually pound up a few by fishing deep in the plunge pools if all else fails. Good luck.
