The Ugly is tied with black bead, green body, black wire, brown throat.

Primrose and Pearl has a yellow (primrose?) body with pearlescent flashabou and copper wire.

The Rusty is rusty brown thread, black bead, black wire.

You guys should add the Green Meanie to that list too. Black bead, cream body, Light green wire, and brown throat.

I like it better than the Ugly.

Props to Leonard for that one!!

Yep, the P & P does have a copper bead. Or at least the way I understand it it does.

My favorite (because it seems the most versatile) is olive w/gold tunsten beadhead and gold wire size 18.

BUT! P/P is REALLY good when it's on! And the "ugly zebra" is good and versatile too.

FYI, anytime Carolyn names something "ugly," it's gonna be tied with that irridescent "bug green" uni-stretch that is almost chartreuse. It's a killer color in Spring and early Summer.

I have been tying the heck out of the size 18 P and P. It's been working great for me.

I tie the ugly zebra midge as follows:

Size 18 curved scud hook

Black tungsten bead size 5/64

Light olive 1X 300 UNI-Stretch thread for the body

Size small green wire for rib

Rusty brown waxed thread for throat

I coat all my midges with Sally Hanson's Hard as Nails for durability.

Good at Taney, great at state parks.

What about fishing these flies?? What methods and conditions do you find most successful?? I have never really developed much confidence

Dead drift under an indicator?

Best indicators for these flies?

What depths?

What types of water; fast, slow, shallow, deep??

I can't wait to make the zebra part of my go to flies

Drift them under an indicator or dry fly. I use foam pinch-on's mostly. Depth depends on activity of the trout. If they are active on the surface, fish them 12 inches. If they are not, fish them close to the bottom. All types of water- anyplace the trout are.

I have an article on midge fishing on the forum under Taneycomo. There are other articles there as well on the same subject.
