trizkid Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 hey guys have been doing alot of tying lately and have been expanding my skills. Just looking for a good foam hopper pattern that works well on the current, or just a all around productive pattern for anywhere in missouri.....i hope some of you are willing to share your patterns ....thanks alot guys TrIzzout
fishgypsy Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I've never had a whole lot of success on the Current with hoppers compared to other terrestrials, namely ants and beetles. I have had a couple days where fish would whack a big orange, yellow, or peacock stimulator, size eight or so, but I'm not sure if they were taking it as a hopper, stonefly, or just because they were pissed. Geoff Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 I usually use a Stimulator when i want to imitate a hopper. I did a couple of foam things the other day that are hopper looking, dunno how they will work though. Also made some club sandwiches, those seems to work fairly well all around. Gavin Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Hoppers, Crickets, Beetles, and Ants work....and I usually fish them in that order...Many patterns work, but I always have some Madame X's, Stimi's, & Rainey's in the box...Sometimes a low floater works a heck of alot better than a high riding foam pattern. Hit the shade lines, bounce em off the bluffs, sneak em under overhanging vegetation. Cheers.

Gavin Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Hopper Juan...looks good..Kind of a rip off of the Pink Pookie from Hatchfinder's in Livingston, but a good design.
Members Juan Ramirez Posted January 26, 2010 Members Posted January 26, 2010 Hopper Juan...looks good..Kind of a rip off of the Pink Pookie from Hatchfinder's in Livingston, but a good design. Hey guys, I am the man behind the fly. Thanks for posting it here. You can also tie this fly in smaller sizes to get a smaller hopper or even a cricket. I tie them down to about size #12. Gavin a rip-off of the Pink Pookie? Really? Yea I guess so, it has foam, hair and a hook, so I guess you could say that it is a rip off! Honestly, I didn't even know about that fly until recently. In essence every fly bears resemblances to others. This is one I have been working on for some time and have it almost where I like it. Tie some up and give them a try. They are fun to fish and really fun to throw later in the year when hoppers are all around. I love to throw them on the Arkansas River here in Colorado and the South Platte River in Cheeseman Canyon. I often drop a dropper off the back end and usually catch the majority of fish on the dropper. When they are really looking up, I just fish with a hopper on top. Juan http://hopperjuan.blogspot.com/
Gavin Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 Welcome aboard Juan. Sorry for the rip off comment. Both flies are in the style of the Madame X (bar none...One of my favorite flies) and I'm sure that many folks have developed there own secret recipes. I tie alot of X type flies and I'll give yours a go. Yours Looks alot like the Woodland Crickets that I see in the Fall..I find tons of them in my pool skimmer basket August-September.
