True, the water won't warm enough to kill the trout until later in the season. But the water temperature need only be around 40 degrees to trigger a turnover event. If the water at the bottom of the pond is oxygen-depleted, it can result in serious, even lethal stress for the fish. Nutrient inputs (from fertilizers and goose poo), excacerbates the situation. I've seen bass, bluegill, crappie, golden shiners, catfish, even common carp stressed and killed as a result of low oxygen levels and pond turnover- why wouldn't trout, which have significantly higher dissolved oxygen requirements, not be affected? Like I said, I'd rather see those fish on someone's table than floating belly-up. If that means I don't get to spend another week or two fishing for them, so be it.

I don't know about that Fishgypsy... The winter pond nearest my home produced a few trout all the way until late April or early May last year (I can't remember exactly when I caught my last trout of the season, but you get the idea) which is probably well after the turnover. I know every year folks catch them at Busch until some time in April as well. They're thin that time of year, but they haven't gone belly up.

Those folks who go out on the when its this thin ice are frankly a bunch of idiots. That would be an awful way to die too.

What's really weird is eric didn't jump all over you about it. He does that from time to time.

I thought you were just slurring.

No, thats my job now! Why are you trying to give the task of "grammar Nazi" back to Eric? He lost that mantle weeks ago!

Hey, Chief Grey Bear, I'd be happy to show you around BSSP if you make it down here on one of my days off...

You can't see my hole because it's right next to the bank. rolleyes.gif Someone else was kind enough to leave it for me. I'm not above making a desperation hole, I'm just not crazy enough to walk on two inches of ice.

I'd be worried that I'd cast into that hole and pull out the fisherman who made it... (no lol)

I will definetly give you a holler when I head up that way. I would say it will most likely be on a Saturday.

The next time I bump into an agent out there, I'll ask because I'm really curious. I bet FG is right that it has something to do with the mussels. It obviously isn't a liability issue.

Out of curiosity do you see a lot of agent's at Busch? I have only seen them at the entrance occasionally checking cars for illegal game and fish. I would like to see more of them around at the actual lakes, but I am sure they don't have the funds for that.

I had a feeling that would be the case. I have been known to sneek off during the week too. I will for sure give you holler at least a week in advance.

I don't see too many walking around checking for licenses or whatever, but I see them driving around quite a bit.

I am thinking it must be something else. I may be wrong, but that just doesn't sound right.

The only boat restriction that I know of on Hazel Creek is no gas motors may be used. You must use an electric motor (trolling motor).

I just took a look at the reg for Blind Pony and I see there have been some major changes and since it is a source of water for the hatchery as gypsy states, I can agree with that.

Let me know if you happen to find something out about Busch.

...privte boats were not allowed, show I checked.....

Nice spelling huh? That should be.... private boats were not allowed, so I checked...

I know Hazel Creek allows personal boats, but unfortunately, trolling motors only (its a big lake for that restriction). Lake Hunnewell is a fisheries lake north of Mark Twain, and it is a private boat only lake. It is part of a fishery, and it is for the control of Zebra Mussels.
