Dutch Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 If you really are a newbie, I suggest you buy a few molds and learn to pour and make sure that you like doing it. Sometimes when I make a mold it goes well and I get it first time. Then sometimes my ideas don't work and I try off and on for a year or two to get stuff to go right especially with injection molds. A good site to go to for learning as well as supplies is http://www.bearsbaits.com/forum/index.php?action=forum Bear is a good guy with a growing company. He has some knowledgeable pourers on there who can answer your questions and teach you lots by just reading on the forum.
Members Wahoo61 Posted February 17, 2010 Members Posted February 17, 2010 Hi. If you have ever watched "The Hunt for Big Fish" with Larry Dahlberg, he has segments where he shows how to make moulds, the materials, etc. His website, www.huntforbigfish.com, has DVD's of how to, along with various products. I have the DVD. It is pretty good for a beginner. You can also register at his forum site, and post questions and he is very good about trying to respond. I have not made any yet, but am getting ready to order some products to mould some spoons and top water baits for wipers. I hope this helps.
Members AmericanAngler Posted March 4, 2010 Members Posted March 4, 2010 I have been pouring my own soft plastics since 1997. Visit lurecraft.com they have all you need to make your molds and more. If you have any questions. Also you can google M-F Lure Molds. If you are interested in making your own molds I can help with that also as I design all my molds. You can also make hard body baits also. Just got to Alumilite.com for more info they have video tutorials. I am very knowledgable. I am moving back to Rolla Missouri this March and should soon have a 573 number by the end of the month. Jeff "Let me fish or else"
Members Bassman755 Posted March 4, 2010 Author Members Posted March 4, 2010 Jeff thanks for the info! I have heard of all the sites you are talking about and I have even gotten some of my stuff from lurecraft.com. I have been looking into ordering some rtv from alumilite I think it will make a better mold than pop. Thats what Im thinking so far anyway. I still have yet to experiment with it. Let me know when you get into the area. It would be a great to get a hold of you and bounce some ideas off of ya. I have buddies that make their own jigs but I can't find someone that makes soft plastics close enough to get ideas from. Its funny I started out just wanting to do my own jigs, lead heads, and soft plastics but the further I research the world of lure making I find myself wanting to get into hard baits as well. Let me know when you get your new number and we can get in touch. Again thanks for the info. Aaron
Members AmericanAngler Posted March 6, 2010 Members Posted March 6, 2010 Get the High strength 2 from alumilite it very durable and is one of the best I am currently using it on all my olds though this month it is on back order so they will send you the more expensive High Strength 3 I just got mine in the mail yesterday. I will be making my molds on sunday and see how the pours go on monday. I also make some 2 piece molds with the HS2 for hard body baits. Oh and the really cool thing is the rtv molds can also be used to pour leadheads and such. I just found that out recently from a friend in California who has been making his own and commercial soft plastics since the 70's. By the way if you go to Wal mart you can get Sculpey Clay for cheap to make your main forms before molding. I am going to see if my fiance can send me a phone before I get to Missouri I should be there no later then mid April. First thing I want to do is chase some bass on the Gasconade I used to have awsome luck there in April near Vienna. To to ya soon Aaron. Jeff "Let me fish or else"
Members Bassman755 Posted March 6, 2010 Author Members Posted March 6, 2010 Jeff Thanks I didnt know I could get sculpey at wal-mart. I tried a different clay to make my main form but it was just too hard to work with. As far as that rtv I will keep that in mind. That brand is exactly what I have been looking at buying. Well talk to ya later.
