ozark trout fisher Posted February 19, 2010 Author Posted February 19, 2010 On mine and my family's first trip to the White River last summer we caught 1 cut,a handful of browns, and plenty of eatin size rainbows. Yeah, that's the way it was when I floated it a couple years ago. I got enough rainbows to be happy with, but only a couple of small browns and a pretty little cutthroat. I didn't get any brookies, but it sounds like I was way too far downstream for that (We floated from Cotter down to where the Buffalo dumps in).
Hotdawg Guide Service Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 If I came down there this spring, what would my chance be to catch some brookies, cutthroat, or both, if I was fishing in the catch and release area just below the dam or down in White River state park? Are they just kind of a chance catch, or is there a legitimate shot of catching a couple? Also, are there any specific ways to target the cutthroat and/or brook trout in the White that's different from how you'd go about catching rainbows? If I go, I'll be fly fishing and releasing anything I may catch. Thanks for any help! As a guide for years on the White the best area for the Brookies has always been the first three miles of the river although I have caught some just above Cotter bridge. I have caught cutthroat all the way down to Ranchettes. They always seem to run in streaks where you catch them for a few days or weeks then you don't see one for a couple of months then you hit them again. As for flies San-Juan worms work better for the cutts. They seem to love cane worms and crawdad tails when I use bait so try to imitae them and you will be more successful Good Luck Hotdawg! Members smac Posted February 24, 2010 Members Posted February 24, 2010 Upper Norfork. No question if looking for the slam. I would agree with all stated. Brookie is the challenge. Get it, and you are well on your way. Good Luck and let us know what happens.

Me and my family had a very memorable trip.We used a guide both days and it made it very pleasant for all 3 of use.I would highly recommend one of the local guides, they are truly the greatest!
Ham Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I caught a slam today! My first down river Brookie! Lots of boats out today. The fishing was pretty slow. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
