TRRANGER Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I was considering buying my line in the bulk 1000 yard spools to save money. The initial cost is more but in the long run you save. My question is does it weaken the line by sitting on the shelf. Is there a life span on fishing line? I usually use Maxima for my mono and Seaguar Invizx and or PLine Floroclear for my fluoro. I respool with about 100 yards at a time on my baitcasters about 3 times a year. Thanks for the help in advance. TR
Dutch Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 Personally I buy my line from 1500 yds to 3000 spools and have for many many years. I keep it in a dark temp and humidity controlled place (bedroom closet)in a brown paper sack. I had put some on that had been on the shelf for a couple of years and it worked just fine.
nwaoutdoorsman Posted March 4, 2010 Posted March 4, 2010 You can store it in your fridge and it'll last a long time.
Members Catchabiggen Posted April 5, 2010 Members Posted April 5, 2010 You can store it in your fridge and it'll last a long time. Good storage tips. I usually don't use line that's more than about a year old and especially fluorocarbon. I've had some real issues with about every type of fluorocarbon that I've used and now I use it strictly for a few leaders only. Seems to get brittle and break on me, especially in colder water. Any advice is appreciated on that. This may help somebody - I used some "Ande" line in Florida a few years ago and it was the best mono I'd ever used. Fished 20lb test for 3 days on a spinning reel and really abused it fishing tules, dock pilings, and wood on St. Johns, Lake George and Rodman Res. The line stayed relaxed the whole time (no coils ever) and was very very tough. Since then I have used it on everything - never had a fish break me off in 3 years, and you can get a big 2500yd spool of the saltwater mono for only $25.00 through Cabela's (it's lime green in color though). Later on this week I am trying their new clear freshwater line at T-Rock which cost a little more - 1250yards/$25.00. I hope I'm still blessed with the same results because (knock on wood) this has been great mono at a bargain price for me. I'll report back on it in a week.
