St. Louis Walleye

so the water temps have gone up over the last week from around 40f to 47f . ive seen little fish activity until today. minnows and suckers and...some other stuff were around today. anyone catch walleye in the st. louis region, meramec river around castlewood . ? whats the lowdown? i think night fishing might be the ticket with the water down low....

cant decide....long rocky rip rap bank in 6-7 ft of water, or long slab rock and boulder flats 3-7 ft deep, or gravely flats, or just deep with rocky bottom. any help much appreciated

I havent been fishing, other than Montauk, this year.. Normally walleye around St. Louis means Winfield, or Chain of Rocks. Never fished the Meramac around here.. You say it is low, and I look at the Missouri and it is still really high..

Walleye in the Meramec should be spawning or getting ready to spawn right now, and I believe night fishing for them is illegal from March to May. This is mainly because in the past, people were able to locate them on the spawning riffles at night and snag them (as well as gigging them). The Meramec doesn't have a huge population, so they may not be easy to find. What I'd look for is a gravelly riffle area, then go downstream to the nearest deeper pool. If it's a spawning riffle, the fish will be somewhere in that pool during the day.

Occasionally they can be found just below the mill dams on Big River at this time of year, but it seems to be a hit or miss thing.

We used to catch Walleye and Sauger just above the old Gravois Road bridge up to the new Highway 30 bridge at this time of year. There is a lot of bedrock on the bottom in that stretch of River. Haven't been there in many years and I see where they blew up the old Gravois bridge and dropped it in the River and are cutting it apart. That probably spooked the fish pretty badly. Another decent place was downstream from the Winter Park gravel mining operation where the River first flows back into it's original channel and creates a fast riffle at low water. You had to be very early to do well at either location and with the recent, although late, warm-up it may be over and done with there.

Hog Wally here I'm new at this but I can tell everyone that there is plenty of walleye and some really big ones on every part of the meramec I fish

If I can figure out how I will post yesterday's catch 3 walleye over 4# and the biggest white bass I've ever caught. 19 1/2 "

There is a few bluff holes on the Meramec in my area where it's shaded almost all day This seems to be particularly good for walleye. If the water is to deep for the giggers then more than likely the walleye there are getting really stacked up. Oh yeah by the way, I have never caught just one in a spot if you have ever caught one, go back to that spot. The giggers on the Meramec are the single most enemy of the walleye. It seems as if there is to many people that can't resist the temptation
