Fly_Guy Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 Just thought I'd ask - I hear the alleged "blunk hole" is heating up - is there access from the bank at or around it? I caught a total of 4 white bass last year, but I've never tried the james. Any tips on fishing from the bank (have waders) around Galena would be highly appreciated. I'm hoping to go early tomorrow - my wife loves white bass (favorite fish to eat fried), but I wasn't able to help out much last year. One day I'll be able to afford a boat Thanks! Brian
slider Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 There is lots of bank fishing at the blunk hole, if it was me I would go down stream from the ramp. You said you had waders so I would throw them in. One of the best places is right across from the ramp. Water is probable to high to get to the other side if I were guesing. I have had my best luck down stream below where a little branch runs into the river. Slider DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!
duckydoty Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 There were quite a few people fishing from the bank below Blunk and doing very well today. Especially early this morning. In another week or two, Taylor Shoals will be very good bank fishing and it is just up from Blunk hole. There was nobody fishing the gravel bar across from Blunk Ramp today, which supprised me. If you had a canoe or belly boat, you could get across to there very easy and be in a great spot that is not crowded to fish for the whites. Fly_Guy Posted March 8, 2010 Author Posted March 8, 2010 Good luck and looking forward to the report! haha - well, the report.... Nada - got there at 7 am, and casted everything in my box 'o' spinners&jigs for about an hour and a half, but couldn't get bit - neither could the other bank fisherment while i was there. Saw a few boats put in at blunk hole, and head upstream. But nothing where we were at. I'll just wait for the little sac I suppose...

From the bank just upstream of Blunks? haha - such is life I'm gonna try it again tommorow am - except earlier. What was working? Also, a limit is 15 right? and lastly, (though I'd just as likely see bigfoot) if I was to catch a walleye, what is the length limit? (assuming 15 inches). thanks, brian (slider - I think I may have seen you today - I was the nut waders & headphones. Did you ever have any luck?)
slider Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 We didnt have much luck either we had 5 total, I tried to fish but my elbow is still to sore to fish, I have an appointment wed. with a orthapdic surgen to see what he can do. motoman Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 This may be older info, not sure if it even still applies? But, last year when we were down, we parked at Blunks one day, and hoofed it quite a ways down the river to a good spot. Only to find out there was a closer place to park and walk to this stretch of the river. - If I'm not mistaken, it as off of Sandstone Road (off Blunk Road). You take it all the way to the end, and you're kinda up on this hill in the woods, the road is lined by a barbed wire fence. But, there's a sign (I thought?) and some nice, sturdy stairs built to walk up and over the fence. Then a path takes you down to a nice bend in the river. (It's a bit of a stroll through the undergrowth, but nothing treacherous, and well worth the trek; and you can see the river the whole way you're walking, so you know you're getting close) That's where we did our best, and there were a few other guys fishing/wading-fly fishing there. VERY nice large, wide gravel bank to walk around on. The water gets a bit shallow before that, so only one boat even got close to where we were. Heck, we didn't even have waders and caught a bunch of nice whites. - Maybe someone else can give better details/directions to this location? - Also, the recent rain may really have things moving through there; but worth a shot. I know last year after some heavy rains, the river really started moving, and got discolored quick.......and sadly.......the bite shut off.
