I was wondering if anyone has been out lately? I'm going to be taking a friend down for his first time and he will be using an ultra light and I have always fished with a fly rod. I was curious what kind of jigs, jerkbaits, or other lures they usually bite on this time of year. We will be fishing around tan vat or below baptist camp.

Thanks!

I was at Baptist last weekend and it was good. White and olive marabous as well as little panther martins should work... I was taking them mostly on woolly buggers, under an indicator, and I suppose you could probably do the same thing on an ultralight spinning rod.

Tell him not use an ultra-light and throw big jerkbaits with a more substantial set-up. If not, throw jigs and Rooster Tails with his ultra-light and catch dinks all day long. Seriously.

Hey! Those little guys are fun to catch. :D

But seriously, if this is his first time, I really would go with an ultralight, 4 pound, and a few small spinners and jigs. You'll catch plenty of smaller fish (and the small fish aren't too small really on the Current usually about 10" to 14"), and maybe have a shot at a good one too. You have a better chance of getting a big brown with a jerkbait, but then again you may not get a single bite. Just something to think about.

#1 spinning lure for the upper Current, in my opinion is a 1/32 Ounce Panther Martin with a silver or gold blade. There will be folks who vouch for jigs, spoons, and plugs, but that's where my confidence lies when I'm using a spinning rod down there.

I'd agree with Joe....I usually go with Medium spin tackle & 8lb minimum for jerkbait fishing. Baits in the 3.5-5.5" range seem to work best and UL tackle just isnt a good match for the 1/4-1/2oz baits that I use most of the time.. The jerkbait bite is usually best before or after the sun hits the water (unless the water is up). If its low and clear, youll usually have better luck with UL tackle or the fly rod during the mid day period. Caddis should be all over the place this week...bring some appropriate imitations if your heading down. Cheers.
