Phew !! At first glance at your unknown fish I thought " OMG! It's a Bighead Carp in TR" then I noticed the placment of the eye above the jaw line.

Landowners who stocked the "White Amur" in farm ponds for weed control were told they were vegetarians only, then they discovered otherwise when the weeds were all eaten.

They're very common at fish sales, and are used (with mixed results), as a biological control for aquatic vegetation such as coontail. They could've escaped from farm or golf course ponds during a flood, or may have been stocked intentionally by someone worried about weeds in the lake.

I moved to Missouri about 13 years ago from South Dakota where the Carp "infest" some of the lakes i used to fish. I just thought i'd pass on a great reciepe for carp if you're interested. Find you a 2" X 4" piece of lumber (cedar, pine, hickory, whatever), season the carp with your favorite spices and then nail that carp to the 2X4. Put it in the oven at 350 degrees and bake it for 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, take the carp and 2X4 out of the oven, throw the carp in the trash and eat the wood. Best way to eat carp that i've found. Enjoy!! I know some will disagree with me as I know people do smoke them and say they're great. It's just a joke!!

Forever if you were born in '73....My real question would be, assuming that these fish have come from flooded ponds, etc...is it an ongoing process? In other words, these fish are typically triploid and cannot reporoduce, unlike the other types of carp that take over fisheries. I guess there must be some kind of steady influx from these ponds, since they are always in the lake but relatively rare...

Grass carp are pretty long-lived (10-25 years), so that may factor in as well. From what I recall, something like 98% of fish produced in the triploiding process are sterile, the other 2% are still capable of reproducing. When you're stocking thousands of the things though, that 2% could potentially make a big difference. I know the big rivers have reproducing populations of grass carp, I'm not sure about other reservoirs or rivers in the states.

If you're worried about them, I'd suggest contacting the TRL fisheries biologist out of Branson and see what they know about grass carp presence in the lake.

I'm with you Grey Bear, I bet MDC would like to know these are in Table Rock. Found it in the back of Cricket Creek swimming around on top like it was disoriented.

I was swimming around (trolling actually) like I was disoriented myself Thursday up the Kings. But I didn't get caught in a net. :donwan:
