Bman Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Yup, We thought this was it! My son Matt & I were drifting right over "Lunker Central" and sudenly I was hooked up to something huge. After a great fight I brought this fish to the surface! How's this for a big ole DRUM!!! *note* the look on Matt's face, he's thinking YUK DAD!!! come on, let me chuck this thing back in the river!!! The Bass weren't really biting very well for us, but any time fishing with my best fishing buddy is quality time! The only good line is a tight line
Members DoctaJ Posted April 3, 2010 Members Posted April 3, 2010 nice, haha. I've had that happen one time to me, I was so disappointed. I think I'm going to buy one of those bps pond prowlers so I can fish the river. How do you catch the smallies this time of year, is it much slower? I've always fished for them when the river was down and it was mid summer.
KCRIVERRAT Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 Happened to me Bman on the Gasconade years ago. Thought that I too had the smallmouth of my life. Was out of the canoe, hooked up and realized this fish was gonna take me downstream with it. I went with it but ended up with a drum something like yours. Had the adrenaline running anyway! I had the same experience on The Sac River one day. I set the hook on a fish and it immediately started tearing drag, the whole time I was thinking I had the state record on. Nice fish Bman, smallie or no.
fozzie. Posted April 3, 2010 Posted April 3, 2010 I've never caught any that big, but a few years ago fishing for white bass I wound up catching a dozen or so drum on little cleos, biggest five or six pounds. Ugly things, but surprisingly fun, and I've heard they're pretty good eating, too. Tom.

Fly_Guy Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I think that has happened to all of us at one point in our lives - Wife and I were catching walleye and crappie trolling crankbaits on Stockton a coupla years ago, and she had been whuping me, till I got a huge 'walleye' on. Turned out to be a stinkin' drum She had the last laugh!
eric1978 Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I was cranking a Wart at LOZ many years ago at dusk. Hooked something HUGE and it fought like hell. My buddy caught a glimpse of it in the dim light and yelled "it's a largemouth!" I just about pooped myself until I realized I'd hooked a ten pound flathead right on his face. At least he was tasty.
