Members markw Posted April 11, 2010 Members Posted April 11, 2010 Does anyone have places to start and approx how long to float shoal??I can find maps for elk river but not much for shoal creek.thx
Members CDC Posted April 13, 2010 Members Posted April 13, 2010 Wow...where to begin. There are tons of floats on Shoal Creek. I would suggest picking up a Missouri Atlas and Gazetteer (put out by Delorme). It does a pretty good job of listing all the roads and shows the public access. Below are a few of my favorite floats and the times it takes me (I float pretty slow though). Redding's Mill Bridge to Wildcat Park - about 1 to 1.5 hours Cherry Corner to Alan Bridge (both MDC accesses) - about 4 to 5 hours Tipton Ford Access to 71 bridge - about 4 to 5 hours Hope that helps.

Those are great suggestions CDC. There are also a couple of floats that don't start or even end at MDC accesses. From Neosho's Lime Kiln access down to Tipton Ford access there are 3 good floats, each one can be anywhere from 6 to 10 hours depending on the water speed and how hard you fish them. Some of these floats might have to be overnighters for CDC . Just joshin' CDC. All should be good for a solo canoe. If you look at a map you would have to locate Old Scenic Route rd., which pretty much follows the creek, but you would probably have to drive it to see the different take-outs. They are obvious spots that have been used for decades, they just aren't managed by the MDC. We have named a few of them, but they wouldn't help a newcomer much. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
Members markw Posted April 14, 2010 Author Members Posted April 14, 2010 great thats just what I was looking for. now will have to go check those out.one of the guys at work said he like to float from below falls to galena anyone know where the take out is there?
Buzz Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Shimmerhorn ( spelling? ) Park, right under the highway, would be the take out in Galena. It's been a while since I've been there, I think it's Main Street. I haven't heard any stories lately, but there used to be some landowners on the Kansas side that used to give floaters a hard time. Kansas laws are very different than Missouri. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.

jtram Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 Don't forget about the all the floats on above cherry corners. Capps to Smack Out, Smack Out to Ritchey, Ritchey to Wagon Bridge, Wagon down to Cherry Corner. A little rougher, lots of logs usually but in my opinion better fishing and nobody else(not that thats usually an issue on Shoal) Not much for the times too many variables but all good day floats with a couple being shorter
Members CDC Posted April 16, 2010 Members Posted April 16, 2010 Some of these floats might have to be overnighters for CDC . Just joshin' CDC. Some of those sure would be overnighters.... I like to take my time and tend to paddle more backwards then forwards. Scenic road is definitely a great area...just a quick drive up and down and you should be able to set up a few good floats. And you can't beat Ritchie for the fishing...it just tends to be longer floats and for sure a little rougher.
Members Summermarie Posted July 17, 2020 Members Posted July 17, 2020 Does anyone know how long it takes to float from the falls in joplin to shimmerhorn in galena? And if theres any rules or anything I need to know
wily Posted August 7, 2020 Posted August 7, 2020 It’s not very far...it’s a good float...I’d say it’s about 4 or 5 hours. ive always heard to stay in the boat on the Kansas side...due to their laws...but we’ve never had a problem. It’s usually not very crowded below Fillmore bridge we always put in at zans
