Members Allen R. Posted May 31, 2006 Members Posted May 31, 2006 Hello, I am taking my wife camping for the first time to Stockton lake. I haven't been out there since I was a little kid. I'm going to be fishing for largemouth bass, but I'm unfamiliar with the lake. Where are the best spots for largemouth bass? I'm a worm man mainly. My campground is at Orleans Trail South, and I'll be in a boat with about 120 HP. About how long would it take to get to these spots. Thanks for the help, I can't wait to go.
wily Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 I'd say if you want to fish timber try the creek channel in Price Branch. If you'd prefer to fish more open water try the old state park cove (point#4 on most maps). Both locations are within 5 minutes of Orleans Trail.
Members Allen R. Posted May 31, 2006 Author Members Posted May 31, 2006 Thanks for the tip. I've read online that from the State Park to the darn is smallmouth waters? Is that true?
Members Allen R. Posted May 31, 2006 Author Members Posted May 31, 2006 The reason why I ask about the lower part of the lake being Smallmouth, is because I'd like to know if the upper part (southern) is better for largemouth.
wily Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 There's more flooded timber the further south you go, so i'd say yes. Son's creek to the right and further up the sac river in the timber is good for largemouth, but it's a pretty good run from Orleans trail to the upper part of the lake. Find the creek channels, put the boat in the shallows and throw into the channel and bring the worm up the bank. I'm not an expert but I think Price Branch will give you a lot of largemouth action. Give the wife a crappie rig and a minnow and she'll catch her share of crappies and walleye too. Plus it's a lot closer to home. The water gets pretty rough so you might want to stay close.
Members Allen R. Posted May 31, 2006 Author Members Posted May 31, 2006 Man, thanks a lot, great advice. My dad warned me about Stockton when it's windy, and said it's no place you want to be. I figure I can try to hide out in a cove if it gets rough.
Flysmallie Posted May 31, 2006 Posted May 31, 2006 Price Branch is a good spot for largemouths as well as a lot of other areas close to Orleans Trail. Don't be so worried about the dam area being smallmouth water, there are plenty of largemouth in that area too. I usually only target the smallmouth and catch plenty of largemouth doing it. Don't be afraid of catching some smallmouth, there are some monsters in Stockton. And of course it is the best fish swimming!
Members Allen R. Posted May 31, 2006 Author Members Posted May 31, 2006 Smallies are a blast, I definately agree with that. It's pretty unbelievable how much of a fight a 2 pound smallmouth will give! So, is it pretty safe to say that points and coves along the lower parts of the lake will have largemouth and smallies? Would be fun to get both.
