FlyFishinFool Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Hazelwood MO Cabela's store said the Traditional II fly rod warranty is 15 years - just bring it in and they will swap it out. * ´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> `•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((º> .¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. Then I remember what an old man told me... " Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown, fuzzy, about 1/2 inch long and underwater."
rcguy Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Thanks. I'll stop by tonight at the KC Cabela's and see if they agree.
rcguy Posted June 24, 2010 Posted June 24, 2010 Cabela's latest policy is a 1 year warrenty on their products unless stated otherwise. You can buy an extended warrenty if you want. So my Traditional II rod ran out about a year ago. That being said, they gave me a new rod with no problem. I also start all over with the one year warrenty as if I just bought it. More than fair to me!!! I did have the receipt so that might have helped. This was all done at the customer service desk. The guys in the fly shop don't have anything to say about it. The days of no questions asked replacement forever are over, I guess, on Cabela's products BUT I was treated MORE that fairly. Sorry about getting this thread off track.
FlyFishinFool Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Sorry to have mislead you re: the warranty period - I got my info from the guys in the fly shop. You would think the department-dedicated sales staff would know what the warranty is on the products they sell. Anyway, glad to hear you got your rod replaced. The new Cabela's policy is a bit of a surprise - guess I will have to re-think some product purchases like waders. If they only warrant them for a year then I will be looking elsewhere when I need my next set. There are a lot of other rod companies that offer great warranties, like Orvis and TFO (just to name a couple), that will gladly provide no-cost or low-cost warranty for repair or replacement. Their new policy may cost Cabelas a lot of repeat business. * ´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> `•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((º> .¸¸.•´¯`•.¸ ><((((((º> I look in my fly box and think about what should guide my choice of the best fly: the amount/angle of sun on the water, the water temp & clarity, what bugs are hatching, what the fish might be eating, and what worked last time. rcguy Posted June 25, 2010 Posted June 25, 2010 Yes, their warrenty is not so wonderful if they were to stick by the 1 year only. In my case they were very lenient. Most of their more expensive rods do come with 25 year warrenty though. The Traditional II is 109.00 rod. 1 year warrenty and to add an additional year of no questions asked replacement was 17.99. I passed on that. I got the rod in a package deal so I paid far less for it. If I were going to buy just a rod I think I would find a more expensive one on sale with a better warrenty. I centainly have some piece of mind that the Sage Vantage I just bought has a lifetime warrenty even though it cost some for replacement. I did learn a valuable lesson I'll pass along... I was hung up on a lily pad and tried to yank it loose buy yanking the rod several times like I would do with my bait caster. I have done this many times because the pond is full of lily pads. This time on the 3rd yank the rod broke. I think maybe the 8 wt line slapped it and that's where it broke. Just a guess. Fly shop guy told me to point the rod at the snag and pull the line to release the fly or break the tipit. It works. Also you can try to roll cast it off the snag. (except lily pads, never works for me). So lesson learned. That is the first rod I have ever broken like that so now I'm a little skittish about taking my Sage out of the case!
brittsnbirds Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Still kind of off Rich's original topic but what the heck, anyone notice that Cabela's fly shop in KCK basically sucks these days? I found one of their fly experts (Hap) up in the camping section this past fall. I accused him of being out of his area and he just laughed and said that was his new home. Being the curious type I asked him who he pissed off. He said no one that the flyshop was going through a change. I have noticed in the past year that they have moved some stuff around and don't have the stock that they once had. Plus taking back some broken and duplicate merchandise I have found that the return policy isn't what it use to be either. I know from experience that Hap and some of his fellow fly fishing experts have helped me several times with their recommendations. Putting Hap in the camping department was a huge mistake!! Cabela's is going to loose a ton of my business. Part of the reason I drove all the way from Northern Cass County to KCK (30 minutes) was to see the "guys" and talk some trout smack!!

I agree .... the last time I was up there it was disappointing. Limited inventory ... some new kid in the shop that really didn't know much. Finally Tim came out from the back and helped me out. Cheers. PC
NoLuck Posted June 27, 2010 Author Posted June 27, 2010 You guys make me realize how lucky I am to have two of the best fly shops around within 20mins of my house.
dave potts Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 It appears that the whole Cabela's operation is kind of hurting. There was a very negative investment report on them in a recent Barron's. What surprised me was that the article stated that last year half of their net income came from their Vista credit card business. That doesn't speak well. I was recently in their Hazlewood (St Louis) store and also thought that the flyfishing dept. had been downsized. Dave
brittsnbirds Posted June 27, 2010 Posted June 27, 2010 PC, Roger that about the store. I met the young fellow, the part I don't understand was putting Hap upstairs. I know he wasn't pleased. Thank god they left Tim in the fly shop. Rich, and to you with two of the best fly shops around within 20 minutes I'm envious. Thank god for the internet! BTW heading down on the 11th(?). Have a newbe that I just got into fly fishing. I think I've created a monster. He will be with me. He works with me but on a different crew. Really had to do some manipulation of the schedule to make it happen. He is really stoked. Anyway we will be down! Pat
