jtram Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Has anyone fished at Talbot recently? I never have but am wanting to get into some bass/perch/crappie without having to float since i will likely (hopefully) be alone. I have a four day weekend and am also game to hit Shell-Osage, Lamar Lake, or Kellogg, but haven't fished any of them. I will be in a canoe most likely because loading a 14ft flat bottom blows by yourself, and would like someones opinion on best shot. Probably be tomorrow and/or Monday so crowds aren't much of a factor. Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Chief Grey Bear Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Talbot - Great pond fishing if you don't mind doing some walking. The two "lakes" there can be hit or miss. But at this time of year should provide some action. Kellogg - Nothing like it was when I was a kid. But nothing ever is. Lots of small crappie. I mean 8 inch and down. Last I knew it was really tough to catch a bass. Perch are not as abuntant either. But I have heard they may be going to redo the whole lake. I think they may be going to drain it and dig it out and such. Deep spot now is only about 6ft. It was choked with plant life on the nothern end out to about the island last time I was there. Lamar - Talked to a friend this week who fished last Saturday and caught 150 crappie. Not one keeper though. It does have some nice bass if you find them. This lake does get a lot of pressure. Bushwhacker - I hear that some good stringers of crappie are being caught now. It also has good populations of large, 10 inch +, Bluegill. If you go here, beware of the wind. This is a prairie lake and runs north-south. You may get to one end very quickly but, can it be a booger getting back. Also while in the area, don't forget about Shawnee Trail. Lots of great strip pits and ponds. jtram Posted April 29, 2010 Author Posted April 29, 2010 Thanks Chief, I had never thought of Shawnee Trail, sounds like a pretty decent place not too far. I have heard the same things about Kellogg, which sucks, since its the closest. Whichever I choose, I'll be sure to put a report in.
denjac Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 [ Also while in the area, don't forget about Shawnee Trail. Lots of great strip pits and ponds. Amen to that! Chief Grey Bear Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 There are some pits and ponds that are well off the beaten path for sure. What a great adventure it is though. jtram Posted May 2, 2010 Author Posted May 2, 2010 Got to run up to Talbot Friday afternoon and somehow timed it just right as far as weather, left after the rain ended at home and got there as it ended at the c.a. Didn't fish much just drove lot to lot and walked to every pond i could with my 6wt got a few perch including a real nice red ear out of one smaller pond, but like i said, more of a recon trip. I do think if you had the time to spend a day or possibly even a weekend there you could get into some pretty killer fishing but thats what it will take, time. One thing for sure I'll be back when I have more time!
