eric1978 Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 I want a mastiff mine died at 14yrs old. Kid in a car hit him on purpose. The dog got even ,it totaled the car.He weighed 210 lbs. For a dog that size, 14 years is ANCIENT. Most dogs that big won't live half that long. You should feel lucky you had your buddy for as long as you did. The kid that hit him should be shot in the face. It's funny, it seems the bigger and more menacing a dog looks, the gentler they usually are, unless of course they're abused. It's always the stupid little dogs that attack. Mastiffs are good dogs, and Wheat mentioned Great Pyrenees and Newfoundlands, GREAT dogs. I don't have a lot of experience with St. Bernards, but the ones I have encountered have all been gentle. If you don't have to have a 100+ pound dog, don't forget about any retriever, almost always good dogs and great with kids. Chesapeake Bay retrievers tend to be somewhat bigger than other retrievers. And boxers are good dogs, too. Irish Wolfhounds are massive, but in a more tall and lanky kinda way. They almost always have hip problems when they're older, and they're not my favorite dogs in either looks or disposition...but they are big, and I wouldn't jump your fence if you had one. The best thing you could do is rescue a dog from a shelter. They're being put down by the thousands every day. Mutts often make the best pets, and they are less inclined to have the same problems that pure-bred dogs have, be it with skin, ears, hips, whatever. If you have to have a puppy, go to the pound and pick the one with the most disproportionately large paws that wags his tail and plays with you. Gavin, your mutt looks like he might have some doberman genes in him, but you're right, the combo of Great Dane and Rot could be it, too. Cool looking dog.
GloryDaze Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 One not mentioned just yet, but man, I think is a bad a&* dog that is protective yet loyal- Male Doberman, they usually get right around 80-100lbs. Wouldn't mess with one of those if I didn't know it. Follow me on Twitter @DazeGlory
Members toadfrog Posted June 3, 2010 Author Members Posted June 3, 2010 THANKS for the posts guys and gals.I think I've found one.Be nice to have me a buddy again.I don't know what to do with myself if I don't have a kid or a dog following me around. A man stands no taller than when he reaches down to help a child.
Wheatenheimer Posted June 3, 2010 Posted June 3, 2010 Right on! There's a good bunch of like minded folks here that feel the same way about having a furkid follow us around. Glad you have a new member of the family! Share some pic's when ya get a chance, we'd love to see 'em!
Members UNC Posted May 7, 2012 Members Posted May 7, 2012 as much as everyone dislikes them ur pitbulls arent bad either it is the same as any big dog ...i am a firm believer in a dog is only as mean as you make them. people have to realize its not the dogs fault that they have no quit in them and the heart of a grizzley bear ive had atleast 1 pitbull for the last 25 years and yes they can be high strung but they wont let nothing happen to you or ur family just as many other breeds .... adopting a dog from the shelter saves him and there are alot of good dogs in the shelters of many breeds . Punish the Deed Not The Breed !

Nitroman Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 You may try contacting a rescue group, there is probably one for any breed you are considering. I have owned several of the large breeds, & would suggest an AKITA. Can get very big ( mine was 145 lbs. ) & very intimidating in their appearance, yet great with all my kids & all their friends. Had a GERMAN SHEPARD " SHILOH " a ROTT " BRUTE " & the AKITA " SHOGUN " the SHEPARD & ROTT were good dogs, the AKITA was far & away superior in all areas just a fantastic dog till the day we had to put him down. Many times rescue groups will have dogs in foster homes all over the country just waiting to be adopted. Whatever your choice, good luck & think about the statement, " THE MORE I AM AROUND PEOPLE THE MORE I LIKE DOG'S " !!!!!!! Rock View Resort Table Rock Lake Greg Pope, Owner/Operator & Fishing Guide
et84 Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I don't have a lot of experience with St. Bernards, but the ones I have encountered have all been gentle. I had a saint named Roy for 9 years, he was small at ~165 lbs. Best dog I have had to date, got him from a no-kill shelter in Bolivar. stlfisher Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I have a Siberian Husky and a German Shephard. The Husky is by far the best dog I have ever had, but they need a ton of exercise. My nephew's love playing with him. They are terrified of the German Shepard though lol...he is a giant for this bread about 125lb's...and a total clutz....always running into things and people.
