WoundedOne Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 I decided to take my dad on a float. This was our first time in a canoe. Let me tell you if you have never been in a canoe before i would not suggest fishing at the same time. The day started early around 8 am we launched canoe out of Lime Kilm Access everything was going great till about 10 min into this float and there we go right into the water thankfully it was in a shallow area where we could wade back to shore and sit back and laugh for a few minutes. So we dumped they water out and regrouped and had a new plan of attack, not sure what it was but all we needed to do is catch some fish and stay dry. My dad ended up with 1 small mouth and a 2-3lb large mouth, me only 1 small mouth. So we thought we had the hang of this that didnt work out so well and there we go swimming again. I just have to last week i went on this same float with Chief Grey Bear, Buzz and KCRiverRat and they made it look so easy how they handled there canoe now i know why Chief let me use his jon boat instead of canoe. This was a great time with my dad who is visiting from southern illinios.... PRICELESS
eric1978 Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 It takes a little practice to get proficient, but once you do, there's no more rewarding way to fish a small river. Keep at it, you'll get better.
Buzz Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 I've tipped a few times, so I know exactly how you felt. I'm glad you kept a good attitude about it and stayed with it. I hope you had your stuff tied down. A couple more trips and you'll be a pro. I hope your Dad isn't afraid to come back though. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.

I have actually witnessed you tipping once....or was I not supposed to mention that Hey, it happens to the best of us and Shoal can be a darn tricky river at times. Like everyone else said...keep at it and you will get it down.
KCRIVERRAT Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 OK Mike... now I know why you call yourself "Wounded One"! Seriously, the older you get the harder it gets, but never stop being a kid. After meeting you, I believe you're a kid forever. Just like the rest of our posse that weekend. Hope to meet your pop someday! HUMAN RELATIONS MANAGER @ OZARK FISHING EXPEDITIONS
Chief Grey Bear Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 Hey Mike, Did you end up buying a canoe? Glad to hear everthing turnded out ok. When you told me that you had been in a canoe on a lake but not in a river, I knew I should put you in the jon. It is much more forgiving and more stable. Being in a canoe on a river or creek is a totally different monster. But it sounds as if you are starting to understand the dynamics of floating an Ozark stream. How did your dad like floating over here? You need to have him come back this summer and we'll all hook up and do another float. You ready to do it again? Fishing is pretty hot right now. BUZZ My dad loved every part of this trip fish or not. He was telling my mom that he wanted to get a canoe and take her. probally not the smartest idea my mom already knew about that we flipped within 10 min. We had every thing tied..
WoundedOne Posted May 5, 2010 Author Posted May 5, 2010 KCRIVERRAT You are right on about me being a kid. Chief: No I didnt buy a canoe, My wifes friend had a old town 158 that I could borrow. I think the canoe on the lake was more of a flat bottom. My dad will be back in a few weeks maybe we can set up a day with jon boat. I am ready any time you guys go again except the 29th. Call me about your computer when you have a minute CDC, eric1978: Thanks I will keep at it not sure about buying a old town canoe since the wife might want to float some times. Maybe one with more stability till I have more time on the water..
