Members Lucky Fly Posted December 5, 2005 Members Posted December 5, 2005 Fished Roaring River Sunday PM with my son, lots of fish but few big ones. Did manage to land a 4-5 lb. rainbow at the end of the trophy waters just on the other side of the bridge. The water was a bit off color from the construction but had cleared considerably by Sunday. We fished the park by the low water bridge and caught several nice fish on a PT. Patrick lost a tremendous fish on a mini olive bugger fished on the swing. If anybody gets him, I want my bugger back . Moved to the skinny water behind campground 2 for the rest of the afternoon. I enjoy fishing this section during the no creel season, not as many hookups, but as close to a spring creek as i well get any time soon, it is technical water . I drive a white Jeep Wrangler with AR tags and a razorback sticker and st. croix sticker in the back glass, drop by and say hello, we can swap stories and flies. I will probably make another trip this sunday. steve "Trout Don't Live In Ugly Places"
Members Lucky Fly Posted December 5, 2005 Author Members Posted December 5, 2005 Sorry for the abbreviation, that is simply a pheasant tail nymph variation. However, it is tied with a skinny body and no thorax. I use pearl mylar for a flashback variety, but because of the no thorax, I cut the mylar in half. On some, I use midge flash to make gill slits. Very effective pattern for Roaring River and Beaver. steve "Trout Don't Live In Ugly Places"
Steve Smith Posted December 5, 2005 Posted December 5, 2005 Steve; we had about the same report. We spent the day fishing the upper end so we could stay close to the trucks. I think the cold front Sunday really slowed fishing or else the fisherman were just too darn cold to fish. It was one of those days where the trout would swarm a fly, but not bite. We caught several 15 inch fish and smaller, and had one nice female rainbow just for a few seconds. I saw one nice fish caught on a spinning rod, but didn’t see the lure or the fish to determine how big. I just know it made a heck of a hullabaloo being landed. Surprisingly, folks throwing small spinners were drawing a bite most of the day too. Best flys in our group were San Juan worms fished deep in tan or red, white R&R cadis under an indicator, and dark hackled Cracklebacks stripped across the surface. Just as a reminder, I talked to a couple of folks who were ticketed for not having a trout stamp with their fishing license. Seven bucks for a stamp is cheap compliance to the fine if you’re caught without it. ___________________________ AKA Flysmith - Cassville MO
ollie Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 I was down there yesterday and froze my butt off! I did manage to catch a few though. I was throwing jigs and caught a dozen even. Had a nice one on for about 5 seconds below the second low water bridge. I caught all mine on a variety of different colors. Best was an olive/brown mix that I tie myself. Lucky fly I saw your Jeep, I was in a blue s-10 with Mo tags. Members Lucky Fly Posted December 6, 2005 Author Members Posted December 6, 2005 Ollie, If I am not mistaken, we shared a smallmouth adventure on the Kings River a couple of years ago with Wayne and Ozark Stream Hawk. I missed this years trip due to the birth of my second son , Benjamin. We should try to get together and fish a little before the no creel season is over. A meet and greet for all the Roaring River crew. I can even cook up a mean streamside lunch. steve "Trout Don't Live In Ugly Places"
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 Hi Steve, thats the same Ollie. Ham and I fished your creek, using your directions, when we were down in your backyard. As soon as I get free of a nagging virus, I plan on hitting RR, maybe this Sunday. I drive a white Liberty now. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
ollie Posted December 6, 2005 Posted December 6, 2005 Steve, glad to hear from you! I didn't actually see the driver of that Jeep, but probably wouldn't have put two and two together anyways. I didn't make the rodeo either last year due to several reasons. One of these weekends we will get together down at RR. Not this Sunday though, I have to work Let me know a good day and I will try and ask off.
