Okay, that makes a lot more sense now, this has actually bothered me for quite some time...

I'm wondering if maybe this is a way to compensate for the shorter rod?

Like 3wt, I own a St. Croix Legend ultra, a 9' five weight. I think it's a really good rod, but I could be biased. I would certainly reccomend it though.

They are definitely a bit on the pricey side, but I'd say they're worth it.

For your 4wt, you can't go wrong with an 8' 4wt. I have fished the St. Croix Triumph in that configuration and it is a peach. I currently own a fiberglass 7'6" 4wt that I had built for me by Mike B, from Prairie Drifter Rods and a 7'6" Albright Topwater 3/4. I fish the Topwater with a WF4F SA XPS and the Lamiglas 4wt with a WF5F unknown brand line. Either one is great for trout and offer superb tippet protection with COMPLETELY different experiences. The glass is SUPER SLOW and flexes into the grip with even a modest rainbow on and the Albright is a mid flex graphite stick that can throw a lot of line with aplomb.

With that said, check into the Echo Carbon 8' 4wt and do not shy away from the Cabela's Prestige Plus line, as is it is SA's Trout taper line, colored differently for Cabela's. For an 8wt, go with the Echo Ion and accept a combo to help on pricing. In the stores, you can substitute lines or reels for what are included. The lines should be ok, but I am not a fan of the Cabela's reels. Ross makes a nice product for a great price.

If you wanted to add an 8wt to your quiver without getting to fast, here is a decent deal I found while looking at discontinued Sage Launches.

This might be too good to pass up. My original rod is an old 5wt Sage discovery (old version of launch) from when I was 15. Great all around rod, fairly moderate-ish fastish action. This special is the price from 15 years ago when I got mine, but back then they came with a reel...still this could be the best rod for your money.

That does seem like a good deal. Hmm...decisions decisions. I think I need to just go and just test out a bunch. Any truth to the theory that you should fish all your setups from the same company?

Strangercreek...thanks for the link.

You cant go wrong with TFO but give the new Ross rods a look. The Ross FW is a heck of a rod for about 200.oo.

A few years ago this would have been a much easier discussion. The recent influx of moderately priced quality fly rods is very cool, but makes decisions tougher.
