Njardar Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 I'm heading to Montauk this weekend and this will be my second fly fishing trip. So I would certainly appreciate any recomendations on what flies/nymphs are working as well a what size tippet to use. Any other advise is welcomed. - Charlie
eric1978 Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 I was there a week ago and olive leeches tore 'em up in the morning. Couldn't get much of anything to work the rest of the day.
Kyle Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 I was there a couple weeks ago and hammered them on a dark green marabou fly with red eyes in the faster water. I don't know what it is called exactly but all it is is marabou and chenile ( for the eyes). The usuals are san juans, buggers, eggs, scuds, copper johns(if the sun is out) and some soft hackles if the hatch is on. There was also an enormous caddis fly hatch in the afternoon/evenings. So if your up for it the dry fly of choice is an elk hair caddis. Hope that helps Kyle

The smaller egg patterns are good too in orange, peach, and tri-color. I'd also bring a couple of the little 1/128 ounce marabou jigs. The white/pink color is my favorite, but black, olive, and yellow all work at times. They are not technically flies, but they do work pretty well and are easy to cast. I use a 10 foot leader tapering to 6x tippet most of the time. Some folks prefer 7x while others go the other direction and used 5x or even 4x. 6x still allows you to land most trout park fish pretty easily, and I've landed trout up to 4 pounds on it. Too heavy of tippet is probably the biggest reason fisherman fail in the trout parks. Also, at least on your first few trips, I'd use an indicator. Guess the depth, and put your indicator about 2 times that far up the leader. The morning is best for sure, but you can catch fish all through the day in the fly area and the catch and release creek. The last half hour before the closing siren goes off is a great time to be on the water as well.

ozark trout fisher Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Thanks! Now if I can just make it through one more workday. I think you'll really like Montauk. In my opinion, none of the other trout parks can hold a candle to it. Good luck!
3wt Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 I think you'll really like Montauk. In my opinion, none of the other trout parks can hold a candle to it. Good luck! What he said. Olive mohair leeches. If I could only bring one fly this would probably be it. And Use 6x. Learn to fish 6x and save the frustration of trying heavier tippet unsuccesfully. Go as light as you can manage without breakign off. You shouldn't need real stout tippet to turn over any fly you would use at Montauk.

I had a friend say it wasnt very good and the water was pretty dirty??? The rain Sunday did make the water a bit cloudy, but not too bad. The water on the fly area was clear Monday, however, the flow was pretty good. Whatever I tried just drifted past them, I could not get anything to work. Better luck nect time.
Gavin Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Heard the river fished really well...Not surprising...water was up and the skies were overcast..Usually makes for a good big brown trout bite. Cheers.
