Members flydude Posted June 5, 2006 Members Posted June 5, 2006 Are those minnows or shad on the trout cam today. They look like some big minnows that I started catching on the James river one day back in March.I was drifting a sz 14 flashback hairs ear for what I thought were bream surfacing for bugs. Caught about 8 of them the biggest about 3.5 inches. What a trophy!!!!!!!
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted June 5, 2006 Root Admin Posted June 5, 2006 I call them creek chubs but Brian called them something else the other day. I'll have to look them up. But lots of small suckers down there too... and one BIG brown. Everytime he cruises thru- ALL the small fish scatter. Fun to watch.
Members flydude Posted June 5, 2006 Author Members Posted June 5, 2006 Sheep's Head minnows sound right?
motroutbum Posted June 6, 2006 Posted June 6, 2006 some one post a pic and ill tell you what they are...i could actually put my fisheries degree to use here haha There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
Members flydude Posted June 6, 2006 Author Members Posted June 6, 2006 They are the chunky silver minnows that hang around the troutcam.
Gavin Posted June 7, 2006 Posted June 7, 2006 http://mdc.mo.gov/documents/fish/2_010.PDF pick one. Cheers.
Members flydude Posted June 7, 2006 Author Members Posted June 7, 2006 Well, they kinda look like the Skipjack Herring or the Goldeye. Thanks for the link.Cool stuff! Now I know what I'm looking at when I come up to fish.
motroutbum Posted June 7, 2006 Posted June 7, 2006 well neither of those fish...ie gold eye or skipjack herring are in this watershed go fish....... no pun intended with the link, i thought the whole thing started because someone found them dead! so if there was a picture of one of the dead fish, then id tell you what they were..i have better things to do than sit and look at the troutcam enough to see what kind of "minnows" they are. like fish There are two types of people. Those who dream dreams and wish, then there are the do'ers. I am a do'er!
Members flydude Posted June 7, 2006 Author Members Posted June 7, 2006 Nope, didn't say any were dead. Just wondering what they were. It's not that important.
Fish Bork Posted June 8, 2006 Posted June 8, 2006 They looked like Striped Shiners to me, which is a weird name because they aren't striped. They get fairly big and I've caught them on my fly rod in the James. http://www.darbycreeks.org/striped%20shiner.jpg Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
