Quillback Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Horse creek cove was where the whites were today, near Rabbit island. A couple of guide boats were spooning for them, 3-4 guys in each boat and every time I looked over at them, sombody was swinging a fish into the boat. They were thick on the fishfinder. I did not have any spoons with me as I was planning to fish for black bass, but I threw topwaters at some whites busting shad and caught 8-10 doing that. Kept 6 for the fryer. Nice 1-2 lb fish. I did catch one black bass on a jig, but I threw the c-rig quite a bit on points and could not get bit.
ollie Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Ain't it fun to get into a school like that? Nice going! "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
Bird Watcher Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 QB, did you get the water temp while you were down there? It was 74 degress up in Elk River last night. The cats should be hitting the rocks very soon. Nice. How far is Grand Lake from Springfield, Mo? about an hour and 15 minutes, give or take
Quillback Posted May 26, 2010 Author Posted May 26, 2010 Sorry Chris, I did not get the temp. I did see a lot of gar on some of the rocks, I guess they are spawning now. I've heard you can catch cats fishing around the rocks with shrimp under a bobber when they are spawning. Never tried it myself, but I bet it would be fun. I don't really know where those rocky areas are, I have heard the Sailboat bridge rip-rap can hold them, but's thats about it as far as I know.
Members Fishinokie1 Posted June 4, 2010 Members Posted June 4, 2010 Nice. How far is Grand Lake from Springfield, Mo? From my house in Ozark to Honey Creek Marina in Grove is exactly 2 hours. I have made that drive many times. Some may get there faster, but I keep it around 75 mph. My father lives right on the lake in Grove. He has been calling me daily telling the whites are everywhere! Honey Creek is a great place to find large schools of whites. I am heading out there in a week to chase after them myself. It is well worth the drive. Aslo, the yearly out of state license is very affordable. I think it cost me $35 or $40 on line for the entire year. If you don't have a boat, there is a public fishing dock not too far from the marina. Lots of fish caught off that dock. Good luck! If you teach your kids to fish, your wife will let you go more often.....
Bird Watcher Posted June 4, 2010 Posted June 4, 2010 There is a great early and late topwater bite for Whites right now if the jigging spoon isn't your thing. From about a half hour before sunrise to the time the sun hits the water, and again for about the last hour of light those things will knock the heck out of poppers and baby spooks. you might even get lucky and hit a nice hybrid in with them.
