OzarksRiverman Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 I floated the Little Sugar on Tuesday morning. Put in at Gordon Hollow, the level at Pineville was around 4.8. Water was moving fast, slightly stained but clearing up. I was worried the fishing would be slow, but Russ and his crew at Hog Heaven put us on the fish. Between two of us we caught 20 smallies, a couple of goggle eye, and a giant bluegill. It was the biggest gill I've ever caught or seen in person (I'll post a pic later). I caught most fish on green or brown tubes drifting/twitching them in the current. A little more than halfway through the float we got caught underneath a toad soaker, had to take out and hide under some bluffs alongside a dirt road. The guys at Hog Heaven came through and picked us up before we got washed down river. There we're two spots below the low-water bridge where you had to portage due to strainers. Thanks to Russ and the guys, had a great two-day vacation. Now back to the real world.
eric1978 Posted May 27, 2010 Posted May 27, 2010 Nice fish! But that's not a bluegill, that's a green sunfish.

OzarksRiverman Posted May 27, 2010 Author Posted May 27, 2010 Nice fish! But that's not a bluegill, that's a green sunfish. Gotcha I usually just use catch-all terminology when i catch those fish...bluegill, sunfish, perch, etc... whatever. you gotta admit that's a big one though.

Pay no attention to Eric, he's kind of annoying like that. In my mind they all get thrown into the perch category even though I know they are not. I guess it's what I always called them and always will.
drew03cmc Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 Sunfish are not perch. I hate when that comes up as anyone who fishes a lot knows this. They are sunfish. There are many species of sunfish and to hear them called perch is insulting to the sunfish. They fight so much harder than a perch does. Our perch species are our darters and walleye. If there are yellow perch in Missouri, them too. Quit calling them perch, for they are not. Andy
